Hi,

I am taking a break after soldering the switches for my new Pidp11 and am trying out some of the software. I'm having a problem access the Nankervis software. When I set the switches and push the button, I get this in the console:

PDP-11 simulator V4.0-0 Current  REALCONS build Dec  1 2024
/dev/shm/pidp11/tmpsimhcommand.txt-1> cd /opt/pidp11/systems/nkrvs
Unable to directory change to: /opt/pidp11/systems/nkrvs
/dev/shm/pidp11/tmpsimhcommand.txt-2> do boot.ini
File open error

Any advice?

RT-11 and 211bsd both work fine. Others I haven't tried yet.

The nankervis.tar.gz file downloaded from pidp.net unpacks into the /opt/pidp11/systems/nankervis directory.
The systems24.tar.gz file downloaded by the install script creates a /opt/pidp11/systems/selections file which wrongly thinks the directory is 'nkrvs', not 'nankervis'.
This has been reported before, so I don't know why it hasn't been fixed.
Check that you have the /opt/pidp11/systems/nankervis directory, then edit the selections file and fix the '1000' line to read:

1000 nankervis

Thank you. The Nankervis files weren't installed at all. After installing and changing the selections file, it loads. Halts after loading, but at least it runs. I will investigate further tomorrow.

You have to use the "boot" (b) command in order to boot an OS. "Go" just continues from the address where your simulator has been stopped for a breakpoint.

So try "b rl1" or "b rp3".

Right.
However, note that GO can take an address where to start executing, and
simh can stop execution for other reasons than breakpoints.

But basically "GO" is equivalent to "CONTINUE". Both of which will start
execution without any sort of reset happening on the system.
If you want to have a reset happen, you use the "RUN" command, which
also can take an address argument.

On a front panel PDP-11 you would only find "START" and "CONTINUE",
which are like the "RUN" and "CONTINUE" commands, except on a front
panel, execution starts from the address you have loaded previously if
you do a START.

The boot command in simh is not something you easily map into something
on a physical pdp-11. Depending on model, and conditions, and so on, you
can cause similar results but how it happens is very different.
