Here's what looks like to be a pin-for-pin replacement......it's a

Geoffrey,

I think the ULN2803 is for low-side switching, whilst the PiDP circuit needs high-side switching:

By the way, for the last two years there's a Toshiba IC in the PiDP kits, no longer the original 2981. It has nicer characteristics in terms of cleaner switching transients IIRC, and the 2981 is actually quite hard to get. Unless you want to risk buying fakes, as I found out the hard way along with a few unlucky builders three years ago!

Kind regards,

Oscar.

Oscar,
Could you share the Toshiba part number, or any other UDN2981A alternatives?

Thanks,
mark

Mark,

The original IC I used was that UDN2981. But they've long since ran out of production, and the ones you find online are surprisingly often bad ones. As in, sometimes there's no silicon behind their pins.

The Toshiba TBD62783APG is the replacement. Alas, that one is also nearing end-of-life it seems. Here is the Mouser link, they still have them:

But I can always send you one, just email me.

Kind regards,

Oscar.

But I can always send you one, also if you're using it for something else than a kit. Just email me.

Kind regards,
