When I run TOPS-10 KERMIT version 3(136) on a different installation of SIMH PDP-10, it has a setting:
Kermit-10>set file byte-size seven-bit
that seems to be critical. Without it, all I get on the Pi OS C-KERMIT side is (highlighted in yellow):
pi@raspberrypi:/opt/tops10code $ kermit

HINTS... If the preceding error message does not explain the failure:
. Try changing the remote Kermit's FLOW-CONTROL setting.
. Try it again with: SET STREAMING OFF
. Try it again with: SET PARITY SPACE
. As a last resort, give a ROBUST command and try again.
Also:
. Be sure the source file has read permission.
. Be sure the target directory has write permission.
. Be sure the target disk has sufficient space.
(Use SET HINTS OFF to suppress hints.)

There does not seem to be any equivalent command that I can find in TOPS-10 Kermit 5A(44)-7. All permutations of similar commands give "illegal command" kinds of responses from TOPS-10 Kermit and no documentation seems to suggest any correct alternative.
What I am trying to do is transfer text files from the Pi side into TOPS-10. Going from Pi text file to magtape then from magtape to text file on the PiDP-10 seems to be some serious overkill.
Insofar as the version installed seems to be TOPS-10 Kermit 5A(44)-7, wouldn't TOPS-10 Kermit version 3(136) seem to be a more workable version instead?
Thanks,
