This is a bit embarrassing, a number of the makefiles had debugging turned on for gcc, some left over from the original, some by me. All changed to optimize now. This can give a very significant improvement. If you don't want to drop your current install and checkout again, in /opt/pidp1-mods do: find . -name '*.c' -exec touch{} \; then run the install script, saying yes to make the binaries.

You should do a git pull in any case in your current checkout to get the latest and greatest.
