My PiDP-1 Rack-kit arrived here in Maryland (SN#91) rather beat up (crushed),  a long yellow "Repacked DHL" tape applied to the top/front seam, and a prominent "Security Checked" label with some scrawled initials.  Yes, I paid significantly extra ($105.81 USD) for this privilege!

A lack of volume-filling material (e.g., bubble-wrap or peanuts) may explain the crush injury, but possibly it was originally packed with such and the repacking left it out ... and crush prone?

My question is whether there is a bag-level (rather than component-level as seen at https://obsolescence.dev/pidp-1-building-instructions.html) inventory somewhere that would make it a straightforward task to determine whether there is an obvious shortfall present?  So I can whinge at DHL or someone quickly :-{.

Others might find this information useful should their kits be waylaid-in-transit!

What I spy with my little eye here is as follows:

- One large bag of components
- One medium bag of components
- One small bag of metal-work
- One sheet of black foam
- Two bags of rails
- Two bags of panels

Is that complete for the rack-kit?

Thank you,
paul

Paul,

The Building Instructions contain a parts list. For the Console version, and for the extra parts in the Rack version.

We add about 1.5 meters of bubble wrap in the box, so if that is missing, yes, another gesture of Customs to the population they serve.
Alas, the $105 is the new import tariff that hit us since about a week - not a surcharge for molesting the parcel (they still do that for free!)

But I think you'll be safe with the contents. If not, email j.l...@ceds.dev for quick spare parts.

Kind regards,

Oscar.

You near DC?
Wouldn’t be too surprised if your DHL guy rifled through the contents to see if there was anything to steal!
In early 2000’s, when the company I contracted for, ordered new MAC’s, we had nearly 2/3’d of them not delivered, but showed by DHL guy someone signed for them.
We lost something like 8 27” iMac, and MAC Pros that the selling did replace.
We eventually found out several DHL delivery crooks were keeping the systems and reselling them on the side. They were doing this with several companies in DC!
Our fix, we demanded future shipments were to be done strictly with UPS.

Have a great Day!

I received my kit today. It too had been security checked and repackaged but I was lucky in that the box was undamaged. I also had the $105 fee before delivery. I’m anxious to get started.  I am loving the stories of the early days. I am old enough to remember those days ( I’m approaching 72 ) but alas was in medicine.

Thank you Oscar.  I'd still appreciate knowing the "packing content" (that is bag-level) which would be where I'd expect "riffling" to happen on an inspection-extraction (ref. comments from Michael Kupec).  IMO posting this information for both kits would be of value to builders.  A photo of the separated bags on a table would make it easy to discern shortfalls if my approach as a bag-list is inappropriate.

Paul,

Please see the attached set of photographs taken when unpacking my prebuilt PiDP-1 rack. Hopefully including the correct set this time. But the focus doesn't improve. Obviously the unbuilt kit version will be completely different. Also note this may have been the second prebuilt kit dispatched and the packaging may have changed with further experience. I don't know my kit number, haven't found a serial number on my kit, therefore don't know where my system falls in the sequence of kits. Guess like Larry, I've been looking in all the wrong places.

I'm in Australia where the box and contents arrived in perfect condition. The box wasn't opened for a Customs Inspection or by DHL. With no Customs inspection, tariffs or duties to pay the kit was promptly delivered. Must admit I was expecting Customs issues as there is no free trade agreement with Panama. As DHL had all the Customs documentation the value of the kit was too low to attract tariffs or duties in Australia. Guess you could call Australia the lucky country.

Regards,
Garry

I decided to post my photos here as well, just for reference to anyone else wondering how their kit compares...

My kit arrived here in Canada at 4pm today. It had the yellow DHL tape and a red "security checked" sticker, but the box was undamaged and the contents as you see in the 8 photos attached.
