Running headless... From the on-line manual (wish this was a pdf), it appears there is no way of 'mounting' a tape from the front panel.  Is that correct?  The method I have to use is to get into a ssh session and stop the simulator.  Then set the sense switches, start the simulator again from the ssh, and then finally press read-in.  Just curious if I missed some trick.  I tried stop, set switches, read-in, but that didn't appear to work.

Yes, youre right. There is no way to mount a Tape from the frontpanel, because mounting a tape is like inserting the tape into the tape-reader with your hands.

You can mount the tape with the web-interface or with the gui-app.

You know I  wish there was a command like "pdp1 ptr" that read the sense switches to load a tape instead of the file dialog to select a tape, say "pdp1 swptr" or something.  You see, I implemented a external "load tape" button to simulate "I've loaded a tape, ready to read in".  I have a separate python application running on the RPI-5 that watches for the button to be pressed. When pressed,  the python script sees it and then starts a shell script that simply stops and then starts the simulation.  It works fine, but doesn't quite work like I understand 'loading a tape' would be where the program would keep running during loading the real paper tape until you flip the 'read in' switch.  Anyway, that is what I did to celebrate PI Day.  Now, at least, I don't have to pull up a ssh just to start one of the canned programs.  Just set the switches, hit the button, and finally toggle the read-in switch.
