So I plan getting a Pi5 for the PiDP-1. When I built the PiDP-10 it was recommended to put a cooling fan on it. But for the PiDP-1 it doesn't seem to be required.
Should I get a fan or not?
Thanks!

I did. I don't regret it, looking at the various temperatures when the PiDP-1 is running. Normally I run 'munch.rim' with various switch settings to produce a nice display, and the cooling fan is running.

(aside: the fan on my Pi-5 for the PiDP-10 died two weeks ago (bearing noise) so I bought another and just swapped the actual fan, not the whole cooling fin thing. I wish they would just sell the little fans as they seem to be a 'consumable'. Mine was running 'munch' on ITS since summer 2024 before it died. WORSE: somehow the finicky contact pins on my NVME bottom hat started acting up so it would reboot every few minutes. I ended up buying another bottom hat - same one as I just bought for my PiDP-1 Pi 5 which doesn't need the GPIO touch contact pins. Much more stable and it's all running perfectly again.)

Same here. My -1 has been running 24/7, cycling thru lines, spacewar, lander, snowflake, and pong. The fan runs during this. They're cheap and while maybe not critical, no reason to not have one.

I'm wondering what is the thinking behind using a Pi-5 on the PiDP-1?  This seems to be such a low compute power use case that the Pi Zero-2w would all you'd ever need.  And, for <$20 for the zero vs. >$130 for the pi5, it seems a pretty good value.  I've been running mine on the zero and have never come across a scenario where it wasn't up to the task. So, what are you guys doing that needs the additional compute power of the Pi-5?  BTW, I run my -11 and -8 on the Zero-2w too with no issues.  However, I did put a Pi-5 in my -10, but that's still probably overkill.

Robert,

There's 2 arguments in support of the Pi 5. I am in that camp, Angelo is firmly in camp Pi Zero. But to justify a Pi 5:
- if you want to run the fanciest Type 30 display on its HDMI instead of over the PiDP-1 web setup. I have a small HDMI display in the book case next to the PiDP-1...
- if you want the PiDP-1 to do other things in the background. File server, media server, Pi Hole ad blocker, or whatever.

But yes, a Pi Zero 2W feels more elegant for the purpose.

In fact, I need to try the esp32 option. That feels even more Right.

Kind regards,

Oscar.
