In 52 patients 0.5-3.0 ml of iohexol, 180 mg/ml, was injected using lateral injection technique and fluoroscopy control. A total of 146 lumbar discs using local anaesthesia was injected. Two types of premedication were used; either diazepam alone or diazepam in combination with pethidine and glycopyrronium bromide. There was no difference in the discography injection pain between the groups (X2 = 0.774, P greater than 0.05]. During discography, some patients had nausea (2%), convulsions (4%), back pain (6%) and hypotension (10%), but no allergic reactions were seen. This suggests that these immediate reactions are more related to the procedure itself than to the non-ionic ratio 3.0 iohexol contrast medium. More troublesome iatrogenic complications were seen the day after the discography in the form of severe headache (10%) probably related to liquor leakage, and increasing low back pain (81%). The latter may be caused by local haematoma or chemical irritation from iohexol. Patients with no pain during injection had a relatively slight need for analgesics (Somer's D = -0.196, P less than 0.05).

Recently, US pop star Olivia Rodrigo came under fire for the length of her second album – which comes in at a thoroughly respectable 39 minutes, the same as Rumours. Fans were seemingly outraged at the short length of the record: “So basically an EP,” a fan wrote online. “They really be calling anything an ‘album’ nowadays huh,” said another. Some publications it was barely over the length of an EP, that it was “shockingly short”.

It’s a curious accusation for a few reasons. One is that album length absolutely has no bearing on the overall quality of a record. Some of the greatest albums in the history of music have been – in today’s viewpoint – “short” albums.

It’s not just something from the bygone era, either: in recent years, we’ve received stellar short albums from Teyana Taylor (K.T.S.E), Pusha T (Daytona, a crisp 21 minutes), and PinkPantheress (her breakout mixtape To Hell With It). You don’t need a lot of time to make an impact.

In fact, you could very well argue that shorter albums have an advantage: they have little filler, and potentially more killer singles. They can be tighter and more cohesive, less tangential. It is much more difficult to maintain attention over a longer period of time – as George Costanza famously put it as he skipped from a meeting after telling a joke, it’s always good to leave on a high note.

At the same time as albums are getting longer, songs are getting shorter. The length of tracks has decreased drastically over the last five years – that in 2016, four per cent of songs in the top ten were less than three minutes; in 2022, it was 38 per cent.

Within those two albums of extended worship are eleven songs that were forged and crafted in the eight years leading up to the moment the record light clicked on. The songs were fashioned in a wilderness and found in the middle of storms. They are the songs of a journey. This year we decided to go back and collect the eleven songs from the extended moments of worship. We remixed and remastered them into beautiful and simple song length versions. I love the way a song can squeeze the beauty of eternity into a few minutes. This collection of songs tells the story of our journey. This is our long story short.

The short rap albums released this year would've arguably be seen as EPs pre-streaming era. The RIAA defines an EP as "at least three but no more than five different songs" with an average minimum running time of 30 minutes. Music streaming services like Apple and Spotify have their own rules for EPs but share the same requirement: "The release has a total of four to six tracks and the entire release is less than 30 minutes."

When paired with these rules, these short projects come across as an album-EP hybrid, all of them having more than five songs but being less than 30 minutes. What was once a defined line between the two has blurred; changing rules have added to the deconstruction of the album.

Kanye West has contributed to that deconstruction for the past two years. Released in 2016, The Life of Pablo saw the rapper altering arrangements, features, lyrics, and more in real time shortly after its release. He also altered 2013's Yeezus, making subtle changes to his vocals and removing instrumental parts from tracks. The alterations were strangely intriguing. Fans were witnessing West experiment with his music in a way that added to the spectacle of his musical persona, the artist subverting the idea of what a complete and released album is.

Some of 2018's best rap albums came courtesy of short rap releases, showing that an artist can create something cohesive, compelling and enjoyable without adhering to a certain length. Short rap albums may never become a norm but, hopefully, the releases that came this year will inspire some artists to do the same, challenging themselves to push the boundaries of what an album can be.

In November last year South Australian artist Matt Ward released the album If I Was in Dallas Tonight. Sometimes good intentions of reviewing in a timely manner fall by the wayside, so here, in a better-later-than-never way, is my short video review.
