Favorites menu

After quite some time, I have put my Mephisto Exclusive board back into operation with the Elfacun module. This setup simulates the five clock buttons and the display of a DGT clock.

I noticed that it is not possible to select an engine via the "Favorites" option; the Favorites menu does not appear at all.

In the engine menu on the display, I can only switch between the following entries:

Special
Modern
Retro
Ret-Sett

In the browser window, however, the following categories are displayed:

Modern
Retro
Favorites

This applies to both V4.3.1 with the Elfacun module and V3.4 on the ChessPi.

Could someone please check if this is a bug?

It does not seem to be a direct bug, but a small confusion:

The confusing bit is in [dgt/translate.py (line 3833)]: engine_menu_favorites is displayed on the clock as Special, not Favorites. The web UI separately labels the same category as Favorites in the web client clock.html.

Hi, maybe I'm not yet fully understanding the new Picochess, however I was under the impression we would have restored the favorites menu to behave as it was in the past. E.g. to be able to specify what engines we want to have in there, from either the Modern or Retro lists. Am I wrong?

I don't remember changing anything in the engine menu handling in V4... I might have forgot that I did of course, but I don't remember the design at the moment.

Its really easy to change if we can agree on how it should be. I would like to get comments from Randy (images) and Dirk (V3) on what we want to have.

Yes, the favorites.ini file was, in the past, a place where you could specify the engines you use most frequently, by copying some entries from the engines.ini or retro.ini files in order to have a shorter list. This was changed in v3 when we started incorporating other engine architectures such as Linux and Windows x86, Python script, historical, etc. which were placed in the favorites.ini file and the name of the menu entry was changed from Favorites to Special & Historical.

I don't think it would be difficult to re-introduce the old behavior. You could do it by moving all the current favorites.ini engines into the engines.ini file and revert the menu entries back to Favorites from Special & Historical. Then copy your favorite engines entries into favorites.ini.

But I think a better solution is to leave the current structure and add a way of designating specific engines as favorites and reintroduce a favorites menu entry which can read and list them.

Of course, whatever the community decides is fine with me.

to clarify again: technically nothing has changed from V3 to V4 for all the engines lists. Just the name as Randy pointed out. Everyone can change the names of the menues in picochess/dgt/translate.py  and edit the list content as usual.

Having said this I would agree with Randy to just add a new list (if this is not too complicated) for the favorites again as some people (myself included) would keep the existing lists as they are. 

So an additional favorites list would be very welcome.

Thank you for the clarification, I was probably out of sync, given the long time I haven't used picochess. Sorry for that. I would certainly appreciate a list where I can put my most used engines, but now that I have understood what you guys said, I can certainly live with what is in there today.
