Here I’ll report on new releases that Compile on Raspian Stretch and work on PicoChess after building engines:

Yes you’re quite right, they are XB, I’ll forget these. The new versions of these 2 Engines are not listed in Computer-Chess Wiki yet, I should have checked earlier Versions for UCI compatibility.

However, although I’ve successfully compiled 33 different Engines and tried them on PicoChess, I’m still having problems compiling these 5 UCI Engines:

Amoeba, Andscacs, Demolito, DragonTooth & Embla. Can you help? I can point you at the source if required.

I have given up on Amoeba. The author does not want to spend too much time on Raspberry Pi support and, instead, refers to this old binary:

In order to compile Embla you need to perform these steps:

(1) sudo apt-get install libreadline-dev

(2) download and unzip the .zip archive from GitHub (https://github.com/flok99/Embla/archive/master.zip)

(3) remove the first line of IO_xboard.cpp

(4) make

Note: the engine identifies itself as 'Emblatrunk'.

Andscacs and Demolito are throwing lots of gcc warnings and errors, too many for me to investigate right now.

I’d already found the binary for DragonTooth 1.0 and had run a STS test a while back. It should compile using go, but I haven’t managed it yet. Zurichess Nidwalden compiles fine using go.

I’d also managed to compile Amoeba under Jessie and had tested v2.4.1.l32a, but have trouble with Stretch. I’ve seen the authors comments on your raised issue.

Thanks very much for your help on Embla, I’m curious as to why I can’t use the GitHub version rather than the Zipped file, I see 4 small differences but they both compile fine.

Yes, Andscacs and Demolito throw out far too many error messages.

For demolito i cant recommend it. The author is not too helpful and he doesnt want to correct any uci error's his engine has.
I changed the picochess source code to allow this engine to work, but i wont put demolito inside with such problems.
Thats a pity cause its a strong engine with uci960 support...but not my fault.

The default compiler uses Clang++, I compiled with both Clang++ and C++ then ran an STS test against both versions:
Clang++ 1692, C++ 1682. This is for a high end Processor, so the Engine will be weaker on the RPi.

So I gave it a quick game on Fischer 5,3 with the book turned off. I don’t normally post my games, but I won easily.

I’m around 1650 ELO but weaker in quick games, here’s the result:

All you need to do is enter the following commands in a terminal:

My default directory is set as /home/pi
sudo git clone https://github.com/Zerbinati/SugaR
cd SugaR
cd source
sudo make clean
sudo make profile-build ARCH=armv7
This compile will take around 5 minutes, the resulting Engine will be called sugar

Assuming you get this far, I can talk you through how to add this to PicoChess should you not already know.

Hello Al,

Thanks for your information.

I had previously compiled with the command "make build ARCH=armv7. This results in a 369 kB file.
The very first start of Arena, the message "Could not open Cerebellum_Light.bin"
displayed. But only once. Sugar, however, began to calculate. Only I do not know if the engine is now weaker than normal. So I thought, I'll ask a pro.
Info: Arena on my Windows PC has access via ssh to the engines of my Pi2 and Pi3. To classify the game strength I run Engines-Tuniere.

After your instructions, I get a sugar file with the size of 358 kB. Here too I get the message "Could not open Cerebellum_Light.bin" at the very first start in Arena.

This message comes only once (as far as I can judge now).

At the moment a tournament is running, if it is through I will report again.

What about The Baron 3.42 (homepage) and Senpai 2.0 (homepage)? Do you have any experience with these engines?

I compiled both engines on my Pi. Senpai seems to work correctly with PicoChess. It supports Chess960 but unfortunately does not have levels.

I'm having difficulties getting The Baron to work. When adding it to PicoChess the build/engines.py script gives an error message.

I had tried The Baron 2 days ago, the files were still in my Documents App, so I had another go.
I couldn’t see any source so I tried the pre compiled Binary for the RPi. this failed when started in a terminal:

Hi Al, can I ask you a question about engines on the Pi in general?

I’ve been playing about with my Pi and with the ‘now working’ screen (official 7” touch) and came across a version of Arena that runs on Rasbian. However unlike the other Linux builds it only comes with one engine. It has the ability to add more but I’m guessing that they might need to be especially compiled.... do they ? Can you help me here? I wonder if the PicoChess ones work! Have you run Arena on your Pi? it works well with the DGT board, in fact the perfect solution if you are looking for a “graphical” chess companion.

Hi Harry,

Yes the PicoChess Engines + any others that compile on the RPi will work with Arena on your RPi.

I tried Arena when it was first available for Linux but it was buggy, so I stuck with SCID vs PC for my Engine tournaments, I should give Arena another try.

I’m lucky in that my DGT board is a Revelation II. This comes with 10 Engines built in, plus with the latest updates, 24 Retro Engines, it also has a Bluetooth mode which now supports 11 characters as per the DGT Pi Clock. I can also play any Windows Engine on it using the Revelation UCI Server and PicoChess now has Remote Engine where I can enjoy any Engine from any platform with the beauty of playing across a board not on a screen.

Al do these engine updates you announce automatically update when PicoChess updates ?  if not how its best to update them.

The Engines I mention here are the latest updates of current Engines or brand new Engines that I search for, compile and will work on PicoChess. (I test them)

Some are Engines we are currently using, later releases of these will be added to PicoChess.

The others are possibilities that could be used on PicoChess.

Ultimately, Jürgen controls which Engines are used. They need to adhere to certain criteria like support levels or support certain UCI parameters like Ponder & Search Moves etc. Cinnamon was recently deleted because it didn’t support these UCI parameters.

We are always looking for new Engines, so I spend some of my spare time looking and posting here, knowing DJ and Jürgen are always monitoring.

I have posted my email address within this thread, if you are looking for certain Engines you want to try on Arena or elsewhere, please give me a shout.

New Engine TeKi 1 no levels or uci960, apparently close to 2200 ELO on faster Windows systems. Other UCI options to be added in later versions.
It compiles and runs fine with no Makefile modifications.
