Does anyone know how to activate move hints that appear after picking up and putting back your own piece?
This function used to work by default before, but after updates it disappeared.

Try enabling PicoCoach in the PicoTutor menu.

There are three options: on, lift and off but none of them activate the move hint function.

When set to ON, press the + button for a hint. When set to LIFT, remove your king and wait for the 'set pieces' prompt. Replace the king and PicoTutor will give the evaluation and hint. You don't say which image you are using but I just tested successfully with the 32-bit Bullseye Lite image on the DGTPi.

Ok. So you can tell I haven't used the move hint in a long time. Let's try this again. When PicoCoach is set to ON, to get the evaluation and move hint, enter the PicoTutor/PicoCoach menu and set PicoCoach to ON again. When set to LIFT, remove your king (or the computer's king) and wait for the 'set pieces' prompt. Replace the king and PicoTutor will give the evaluation and hint. These evaluations come from PicoTutor (i.e. the stockfish engine, a-stockf). If you press the + button, you will get the current best move as determined by the current selected engine. Also, once out of book, pressing - will show the current engine's evaluation.

Excellent. It works.
I think that before I could use any piece, not just the king, but this option is completely sufficient for me.

Thank you Randy for your great work on the picochess project.

Glad it works, Oskar.

Yes, it used to be any piece but Dirk changed the code to prevent too many false activations.
