Hi everyone,

I have uploaded new 64-bit Desktop and Lite images for RPiOS Bookworm and Bullseye. The main differences are the inclusion of the new 64-bit DGTPi program and library provided by Ghislain Bourgeois (a huge thanks to you from the community), removal of the 32-bit python virtual environment in the Lite images and updated documentation. The 32-bit Bullseye image are unchanged but I will provide links to them below as well. All Lite images are pre-configured for the DGTPi and do not contain a desktop GUI.

As before, please read the documentation. I can't guarantee it is free from errors so let me know if you find something that doesn't work or doesn't make sense.

64-bit Bookworm Desktop (4.9 GB)

64-bit Bullseye Lite (4.2 GB)

64-bit Bullseye Desktop (4.7 GB)

32-bit Bullseye Lite (3.9 GB)

32-bit Bullseye Desktop (4.8 GB)

I have updated the 64-bit Desktop archives with corrected instructions for running on a DGTPi. I would suggest not using the Desktop images on a stock DGTPi with a Pi3b inside. You'll have a much better experience on a Pi4 modded DGTPi or with the Lite image. All links remain the same.

Hi all,
Can someone please explain to me what the exact difference between the Desktop and Lite Versions are?
Is it just about getting rig of the overhead and getting performance on for that? Is the Lite Version also running a Web Server, so I can automatically connect an iPhone/iPad device to it in order to be able to operate the functionality and to see the moves? In addition what is the behaviour when connecting the DGT-3000 Clock - can I control the Picochess from there and seeing the moves or do I have to do a special cable to fake a DGT-PI setting?

Is there any detailed documentation out there that clearly explains this - I was unable to found it and I guess the original DGT-Pi Manual does not explain the Picochess Web functionality.
In addition does anyone has a Cheatsheet that explains the functionality of the possible setting with extra Queens? I have seen one in the past but I am no longer able to find it.

Thanks in advance and keep up thze good work!

Peter

The Desktop version was put together using the official 'Raspberry Pi OS with desktop' image. The Lite version was put together using the official 'Raspberry Pi OS Lite' image. If you have a monitor attached to the Pi and want to see MAME artwork or open a browser or use VNC remotely, or any other functionality that needs a desktop GUI then the Desktop image is for you. It boots to a desktop environment and uses more resources. If you operate the Pi headless, and don't care about seeing MAME artwork, VNC, etc., then the Lite version is all you need. It boots to the command-line. You can turn a Lite image into a Desktop image by adding software. PicoChess is the same in either image.

Both images start a web server which you can connect to if your Pi is on your network.

The DGT3000 clock can be connected to a DGT board using a clock cable and PicoChess can then be operated by the clock buttons. However, the display will only show 8 characters in this configuration.

Is there any detailed documentation out there that clearly explains this

No. Check the documents in the /opt/picochess/manual folder. However, some of them are outdated.

See previous answer or Dirk's post here.

I used Meld to "surgically" update Pico to my current version of the Raspberry OS. I get to keep my legacy setup (e.g., Desktop and file options) and still have the most recent update to Pico.
I like the new historical menu option since it makes the PGN_Replay easier to find and simplifies the modern engines menu options.
Nice work guys...
