Hi,

I’m not aware of any limit, I have run mine off a 128 gb micro sd card,  but not tried higher. I can also boot mine off a 256gb ssd drive and a 128 gb M.2 card.

Cheers,

Al.

Thank you Scally, 128 GB without partition ? SDXC format can run instead of SDHC. I shall try the huge Dirk's V3 on my Revelation 2 AE and the Randy's V3 on my DGt e-board bluetooth. B-R  Gilles

Gilles,

You will need a boot partition formatted as FAT32, which is 'limited' to 32GB, but the root partition (formatted ext4) can be any size.

I should clarify that FAT32 supports larger volumes, but Windows will limit it to 32GB (there are ways around this). Large formatted SDXC cards are typically formatted exFAT which will not be recognized by RPiOS out of the box. If you are just using a card as storage (e.g. via USB) and you want it to be visible in Windows, you'll have to use another program to format it.

Randy. Ok, But on what partition place the Picochess Software? If I have a 64 GB SDXC card with 2 partitions of 32 GB, what is the interest compared to a 32 GB SDHC card? Thanks. Gilles

Hi Gilles,

You will need to write the (Lite or Desktop) image to the SD card using Balena Etcher, Win32DiskImager or similar software. It will overwrite everything on the SD card creating a boot and root partition. When booted in the RPi, the image will expand to fill the card. The Lite image will fit on an 8GB card, the Desktop image needs a 16GB one.

Hi Randy thank you for your reply and specify,

Yes of course,I already use Balena and Win32DiskManager and I have copied without problem your Lite version on a 16GB microSDHC card without any problem. But I intend to copy the huge version of Dirk  https://www.schachcomputer.info/forum/showthread.php?t=6194 (more 29 GB) , a 32 GB SDHC is too small and I need a 64 GB card, it is in SDXC. If I use directly Win32DiskManager or Balena to copy this format, it will work?  B R .Gilles

Oh, I didn't realize what you were trying to do. Yes, it will work. I can't believe it is so big. Perhaps it wasn't truncated like my images.

Hi,

the image is now smaller.

3 GB - Download
16 GD SD-card required

But it takes a little bit longer with the first start. Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet. ;)

I would particularly like to thank the developers of picochess too: a really fantastic open source program.

Thanks Micha for the link of the new image. It's increasingly difficult to find 16 GB or 32 GB micro SDHC cards Just a question, what to do with a 64 gb microsdxc not formated in fat32 but in exfat, can I copy directly the image mit win32Diskimager oder BalenaEtcher and it will start on my DGTPi or I must reformat with Minitool partition at least with a small partition in fat32 ant the rest in exfat or the all in fat 32 if possible. In what part i shall place the image on the sd ? Thanks for your answer. B-R Gilles

Sorry, I have to correct myself, only an 8 GB SD card is needed. Thought the system needed more space, but it's only 4.3 GB. i'm getting old... ;)

In principle, large SD cards are no problem with this image.

You install the image e.g. via WIN32DiskImager Windows). After the start on the Pi (takes about 3 minutes at the first start, Pi restarts once - patience!!!) the full capacity of the SD card is available. The system uses ~4.3GB, the rest is free on the card. You don't have to do anything.

Vielen Dank Micha, aber das war nicht genau meine Frage. Ich wusste bereits, was du mir erzählt hast. Bis bald .Gilles

Oh sorry, my English is not so good. I have misunderstood the question.

If the SD card is formatted in exFat, you can write the Pi image directly to the card via Win32DiskImage.  Works without problems with the DGT Pi.
