Hi everyone,

I have updated all three 64-bit RPiOS Bookworm images. Here is a list of what has changed:

1. updated engines: Arasan Classic and NNUE (v24.2.2), Crystal (v8), CT800 (v1.46), Ethereal Classic (v14.40), Lc0 & Maia (v0.31.1), MAME (latest v0.269+ dev version as of yesterday), Texel (v1.11), Stash (v36.0) and Stockfish (v17). Note that Igel above v3.2.0 no longer compiles on non-x86 processors. Also, Ethereal NNUE is now a commercial program - you pay for the network file. So only classic evaluation is available using the source code.
2. a few .uci files have been updated and fixed. Elo levels are now rounded to nearest 100.
3. the Dutch translation has been updated by Henri. Thanks!
4. MAME (mess) support files have been updated. Thanks to Dirk for providing updated plugins and new/updated custom artwork. Note that this is a work in progress as issues will arise with MAME code changes.
5. Pico Tutor no longer starts its evaluation engine(s) unless turned ON in the Pico Tutor menu. Thanks Dirk!
6. Patricia 3.1 is still included, but there is an issue that an illegal move is given by the engine when mate is near, at least in position setup mode. Hopefully the next release from the author will correct this.

Please read the documentation. The links (below) are unchanged.

Enjoy.

It appears I overwrote the Wine image favorites.ini file with the Desktop version, so the Windows engines are missing. I will update that image and post back here when it is uploaded. I have attached the correct favorites.ini file. Just place it in /opt/picochess/engines/aarch64.

Unfortunately I can't do anything about that, Peter. Perhaps try again later.

Steve did you try to copy the file to your google drive? Do you have enough space there?

I suspect you are running out of cache space in Chromium ($HOME/.cache folder). Perhaps try Firefox which downloads directly to the destination folder or use a download manager (or download on your PC).

I just downloaded all three images without a problem. To do this you have to log in with a google account before downloading.. Should this not work either then i will try and make a download link to the images on Mega. Let me know!

Hi Randy,

I think the menue might still be messed up. For example when switching in the Mode Menue to Evalution it says "Evaluatie tonen" ?
Should be easy to confirm as I recognized it in all my Pis with latest Image

Thanks, Peter. I've asked Henri for the Dutch text (nltxt) for the kibitz mode and will update the translate.py file when I get it. In the meantime you can fix the error by removing the English web_text in the "mode_kibitz_menu" section (starts at line 4803). So, change

        if text_id == "mode_kibitz_menu":
            entxt = Dgt.DISPLAY_TEXT(
                web_text="Evaluatie tonen",
                large_text="Eval.Score ",
                medium_text="Score   ",
                small_text="score ",
            )

to

        if text_id == "mode_kibitz_menu":
            entxt = Dgt.DISPLAY_TEXT(
                web_text="",
                large_text="Eval.Score ",
                medium_text="Score   ",
                small_text="score ",
            )

Here is the updated translate.py. No changes to the Dutch text was required so it just incorporates the fix for the English web_text. I'll incorporate it in the next image update. Note that all 3 images are affected.

Hello everyone.

I've been following you for a few years but my lack of knowledge of the English language and Linux prevent me from commenting and thanking you for the evolution of Picochess.

For a few months now, Picochess installation on a Raspberry 4 has been crashing (see the error message).

Do any of you have a solution?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Charles.

That looks like a problem with the boot partition. You didn't say which image but I would suggest downloading a new image and carefully following the instructions in the Readme.txt file to flash the image. If that still doesn't help, perhaps try a new SD card. Remember that if you use the Raspberry Pi Imager the first boot will fail (you will see the red error text flash by if connected to a monitor). When this happens, the Pi will shutdown. Just cycle power and it should be fine (it will reboot a few times). If you flash the image using e.g. balenaEtcher you will need to set up networking manually, as explained in the Readme.txt file.

Hello Randy.
Thank you for your reply.
I use very good SD cards (Sandisk 64 GB).
I create the image with WIN32DiskImager on Windows 11 and, after my failures, with BalenaEtcher on MacOS.
The file is: 64-bit Bookworm Desktop (5.4 GB)

A few months ago, after decompression, there was an automatic reboot.

Here, with the latest images, there was no automatic reboot.

I'm going to reread the readme file this weekend and try again.

Have a good WE.
Charles

Dirk mentioned he had the same issue using macOS but when I downloaded the image and flashed in Linux using balenaEtcher it worked OK (automatically rebooting after expansion). I can't test macOS but I will try to duplicate the issue using Windows 11 with Win32DiskImager and let you know how it goes.

Dirk didn't mention if he solved it but I sent him the updated files so he may have just updated an old image.

Make sure the SD card is unmounted or safely ejected after flashing.

I couldn't determine which Win32DiskImager to use (sourceforge.net or win32diskimager.org or github) so went with my go-to utility balenaEtcher since it's always reliable for me. I made sure Win11 was up-to-date. I then flashed the Desktop image and it loaded fine in my RPi4-8GB. I had a monitor connected along with wireless mouse and keyboard. It rebooted a few times as expected then PicoChess started. I used the System/Eboard menu to select my board (ChessLink). It rebooted. I then used the System/Power menu to exit PicoChess and right-clicked on the network icon (top right) and selected my wi-fi country. Then my network showed up and I entered my password and all is working.
