Hello

I do own Raspberry Pi 3 ver B (just have it from some past experiments). I want to buy a DGT 3000 clock. I want to connect it like described in this article: https://picochess.com/howto-turn-a-dgt3000-into-a-dgtpi/  I’ve noticed, that there was a discussion in the comments section of this article – about initial problems with Pi3 ver B version.

It was solved by someone. The discussion was initially some years ago... around 2017

But my general question is – once I would buy now DGT3000, connect it as described in the above article – is there a Picochess Image available, which is working with Pi3 ver B version ?

(An image, which would just work with ver B out of the box..., without making a deep dive into it. I would like just to setup the above mentioned version + the clock – to be able to see, what’s available in the newest Picochess, and make some experiments there. Although – I’m not at programmer level now – so I would like to try something relatively working.)

I just want to ensure your opinion, before purchasing the DGT3000 clock itself. (I’ve checked the flash 2.02 version – which is available for me).

Thank you,

Rafal

Hi Rafal,

Any image that can be used in the DGTPi should work for the mod. I would suggest using a v3 image to take advantage of Dirk's improvements.

Randy,
thank you for your feedback.

I've found here:

the link to v3.

Which version is suitable to RPi 3+ ? (lite?)

I will purchase the DGT3000 and try to setup my own enviroment.

As per my perception, the "orginal" DGTPi is a combination of DGT3000 + RPi.

Why on the above mentioned thread - Scally mentioned following, as of the display coverage?
medium = Stocf 12 <<<< DGT 3000
large = Stockfish12 <<<< DGT Pi

As I'm pretty busy, I'm starting to acquire the knowedge, purchasing the clock, and then I need to find some time to establish all of it into the working computer :)

thx guys for your support,
Rafal

Hi Rafael,

as much as I like my Revelation II and "MolliPi" (special custom made DGTPI by Wilhelm without the need of extra batteries, internal sound card & speakers, PI4 instead of PI3 - you can read more about this here:

I now use the PicoWebChess solution most often and enjoy it even more than my Revelation II with Picochess.

If I would start new and buy hardware for Picochess this would be the way to go for me (for this solution a PI4 is recommended because of the special Desktop image and if you would like to enjoy old emulated chess computers in fill speed and have and analysis engine running in parallel etc.)

- nice 7 inch touch interface
- no need anymore for the DGT3000 clock with its restricted display capabilities
- integrated speakers (speakers make really sense with picochess)
- nice graphical web interface for displaying the board/moves/comments & game history. You can even start an analysis engine in. parallel and see its principal variant etc.

Have a look at the many threads regarding the PicoWeb solutions in this forum (eg my thread https://groups.google.com/g/picochess/c/jC-EEwEd15M/m/CQP6IO0UCAAJ )

You will need a special image for this, Micha from schachcomputer.info did an excellent job by providing several for different resolutions:
Regardless which hardware solution you will give a try I am sure you will enjoy Picochess V3!

Dirk,

thank you for all your feedback. I will study the other threads as well.
But basically - my starting point is - we do have now a DGT chessboard and figures (which is also the expensive part of the set) - I do own a R Pi 3+, so financilly - buying the DGT3000 is the most economic approach for me.( I just want utilize that HW which I do posses now)

thank you, Rafal

Hi Rafal.

Hooking up a DGT 3000 to the board using the clock cable limits the display on the clock to 8 characters. Doing the wiring mod will allow 11 characters since you will be wiring directly to the clock, like the DGTPi is, and not relying on the communication from the board to the clock.

I agree with Dirk that going for the touch display with Pi inside is the nicest solution, but if you go your preferred route then probably use the Lite image. If you want to use a keyboard/monitor/mouse or use the RPiOS desktop via VNC (or use the MESS chess engine display) then you can use the Desktop image. But, it's probably better using a Pi4 with the Desktop image. I test both in the DGTPi (RPi3b) and they do work so experiment.
