PicoChess v3.4 'Trixie' Images [31 Oct 2025]

Hi Everyone,

I have updated the v3.4 images to fix a small issue with the Time setting when switching back from a retro engine to a 'normal' engine. Thanks to Dirk for tracking down and fixing the issue. The Time now will revert to the def-timctrl setting in picochess.ini.

what is the difference between PicoChess 3.4 and PicoChess 4 an which one is the best for the original DgtPi?

I think I would recommend V3,… You will get a stable ready made solution. Just download the image and you are good to go with all the latest engines.

In V4 we are still testing basic concepts like how to automate future engine upgrades and how to improve the web interface. If you feel comfortable with attaching a screen and doing some Linus shell commands yourself you are most welcome to join the testing. You can only get a base V4 image and at the moment you need to get the latest engines by running some shell scripts.

If you are able to do some work yourself you will get the same setup on V4. Everything is not automated yet
