I managed to get my bookworm 32bit image to work but with no sound. Today I’ve sorted the sound out and it works using an aarm64 folder instead of the armv7l folder.

I’m now going to set-up a 64 bit system

Here’s a link to a video showing it working …

Cheers,

Al.

That should read an aarch64 folder …

Hi all,

I’ve got a 64 bit system working with sound 😄

Ah that’s cool Al.

That means sound is working for you via usb c to 3.5 mm jack adapter!?

And what about wine? Can you execute wine in 32 bit mode somehow? Or is there even an official wine for 64 bit on raspian (I think box86 is already in 64 but?!)

Hi Dirk,,

Yes I’m using a usb to phono adapter …

I’m not seeing wine at all …

I have working 32bit and 64bit systems but only a couple of engines so far, although it looks as though all the armv7l engines work, but must be placed in an aarch64 folder. No other alterations are necessary …

Cheers,

Al

Yea 32 bit engines do work (if necessary libraries are installed I think) - that’s  why I thought that our old 32 bit wine should run as well. (I had it running somehow on a 64 bit bullseye pi4…
Willl see when I will order my pi5 but that  might not be in the near future…

Thanks Al.

Hello

I have now made my first moves with the PI5.

I use the following equipment:
A DGT3000 plugged into the DGT board. (Mode 25)
The DGT board connected to the PI5 via Bluetooth
Bookworm 32Bit Litle
Original PI4 power supply 5.1V 3A

As already written, only engines from the aarch64 folder are loaded.
It also looks to me as if all engines are running from the armv7l folder - as long as they are placed in the aarch64 folder and the engines.ini is also located there.

I can't say anything about the sound yet. I can only connect my speaker via the 3.5mm plug and the PI5 does not have a connection for this.
The sound card is coming next week (also the 5A power supply).
Then I can say more.

Hi all,

I have all types of engines working on my RPi5 now, normal, NNUE, mame etc.

I have 1 problem, the sound. It’s working via a usb to phono adapter but the first part of each move is missing, so instead of Nf6 I get f6 on the sound, it’s the same on every move …

Has anyone some suggestions to remedy this, I’ve tried speeding up the moves etc, to no avail.

Cheers,

Al.

Hi Al,

In PulseAudio you would edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and comment out the load-module module-suspend-on-idle entry. Not sure that will work here since I think the new RPiOS uses PipeWire. You could try editing /usr/share/wireplumber/main.lua.d/50-alsa-config.lua and change the value of session.suspend-timeout-seconds to 0 (near the bottom of the file). If that doesn't work, I don't know.

Hi Randy,

I don’t have PulseAudio or PipeWare installed.

The output from raspi-config is attached, the 1st from System Options / Audio, the 2nd from Advanced Options /Audio Config

Cheers,

I guess the Lite version doesn't come with a sound server and uses ALSA directly. I suppose you could try installing pipewire and wireplumber to see if it helps, or install pulseaudio. Did you have to install any drivers/overlays for the USB DAC?

Hi Dirk,

I have been able to run wine and wine64 with box86 and box64 on 64-bit Bookworm but not with PicoChess. I have tried many versions of wine (32-bit) but most don't work. Wine64 seems to have better success but can only run 64-bit Windows programs. Either way, PicoChess crashes when selecting Windows engines (with proper script set up as before). I think it's due to the long startup time of the Windows engine and/or the many lines of output when starting wine (though I'm not sure if they are being produced by wine/wine64 or box86/box64. And the performance is pretty bad when comparing 'stockfish bench' using wine to the native aarch64 stockfish engine on the Pi 4. The 64-bit Linux amd64 version of Komodo Dragon works well through box64, though. Thanks to Gerhard for mentioning that release. I think the Windows engines are still best run via ssh on a Windows PC. :^)

I suppose one option would be to hard-code the engine folder in the uci/read.py file instead of using platform.machine(). Not sure if it's the best option, though.

Hi all,

I can’t overclock my RPi5, it ignores my settings:

over_voltage_delta=50000
#over_voltage=6
# Set the Arm A76 core frequency (in MHz; default 2400).
arm_freq=2800
# Set the VideoCore VII core frequency (in MHz; default 800).
gpu_freq=1000

The over_voltage_delta is preferred over the old over_voltage, but I’ve tried both.

As you can see it’s still operating at 2.4 GHz/

pi@RPi5-bookworm:~ $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
2400000

Attached is my /boot/config.txt, if anyone can see the problem?

Cheers,

Al

Looks like some gibberish in the config.txt is preventing the commands at the end to be seen. Check the section with the overclocking url.

Hi Randy,

Yeah that works!

Putting the overclock to the top works great, there must be some rubbish in the config.txt somewhere, I’ll check each command

Thanks for your help

Hi Randy,

If I remove the url, it makes no difference.

The clocking works at the top of the file, but if I move it to the bottom then it’s ignored..

So something else is interfering with the file?

Ah, I see the issue. The overclocking lines are under a [pi4] section. To end a section, you need another [all] heading. So place any lines applicable to the Pi4 in a section starting with [pi4], end with [all], create a [pi5] section, enter your Pi5 overclocking entries, and end that section with another [all].

It still doesn’t work with the overclock at the bottom. So I just put it to the top of the file.

Perhaps they haven't added the [pi5] filter yet. In that case, you can put the lines under any [all] section, or at the top, before any filters, as you did.

Here's a little update

Picochess is running - Litle 32Bit Pi5
the “normal” engines are running
the retro engines are running
the remote engines are running
Sound with sound card active

(the remote engine runs in conjunction with my Win10 laptop, I haven't been able to get my Win11 PC to accept ssh access yet.)

Hi Wilhelm,

I tested remote engines with Windows 11 and I have no issues in Bookworm. Did you enable/install the OpenSSH Server in Windows 11 and start the service?

I have the OpenSSH SSH Server service startup type set to manual and OpenSSH Authentication Agent service startup type set to disabled. I set it up a while ago and think the Agent was disabled so I could just use a password rather than a key in picochess.ini. Also, I set the SSH server to manual since I only want it active when I need it.

Hello Randy

Thanks for your support.

I had installed the second service in Win11 and set both services to "automatic start".
Still, I couldn't log in to the PC from any of my devices (laptop, smartphone, Rasperry Pi).

I specified the name that can be seen in Explorer under c:\Users\... as my user name.
When installing Win11, this name is generated from the first 5 characters of the email address that must be provided when opening an account with Microsoft. It is not possible to log in to me with this user name.
You may have to use the real name associated with the account instead.
I'll test that when I get the chance. (I have little time this week)

I added a new user "pi" in Win11.
Under this username "pi" I can log in from all devices and the remote engine is also running.

Thanks Randy

Hi Wilhelm,

That's interesting. I do log in with the generated 5-character name that's created in C:\Users, and use my Microsoft account password as the ssh password.

But at least you have it working with 'Pi'.

Yes, that's strange.
It's still the case that I can't log in as the "main user" via ssh. As user "pi" it works. The passwords are the same.
Even with my real name it doesn't work.

On the Windows 11 PC, logged in as normal user, open Powershell and type:

Do you get what you expect?

Hello Randy,

In Powershell I get my username displayed after "$env:USERNAME",
as it can be seen under c:\Users\....

From your smartphone, using “Mobile SSH”:
1)Connect:
"Connecting to 192.168.178.21 port 22, please wait..."
"login as:"

2) Enter my username --> Send

3) Here I enter my password --> Send

4) "Access denied"
and the password query is repeated.

5) this is repeated several times until the final message comes:
"Remote side sent disconnect message
type 2 (protocol error):
"Too many authentication failures""

There are no problems with the user “pi”.

I'm not familiar with Mobile SSH so can't really comment on the response. Can you ssh into the Pi from your Windows 11 PC, then in that session, ssh back to your PC? I'm curious what the Pi sees.
