Hi!

There seem to be two different ways to connect the DGT 3000.

I can directly connect the clock with the PI by some cables and soldering or connect the clock to the e-board. (I know about the necessary changes in the picochess.ini)

I have chosen the second way and wonder if this was the right decision.

Which way is preferable?

Personally,  anything connected to the board is cumbersome when you have to spin it.
Connecting a Raspberry Pi to a DGT 3000 clock is a simple process.

1) Source a 3.5mm jack plug that has 3 wires (red, white, black)
2) Spice the white and red wires so you have two red and two white wire leads
3) Connect the red leads to the #5 and #35 GPIOS
4) Connect the white leads to the #3 and #12 GPIOS
5) Connect the black lead to any ground GPIO (6,9,14, 20,34)
6) Plug the 3.5mm jack into the side of the DGT 3000 clock

I have the GPIO connections numbered and color coded in this image (zoom in).

The guideline from the grandfather of picochess is still online:
Also quite a lot of sample implementations.

I have the pi in the DGT3000 housing with a 3D printed extension. (Looks like a DGT-Pi)

Yes, this is the website I used to get the GPIO connections. They are becoming a little outdated. For those connecting a 4b Pi to a DGT 3000 the red #35 connection is #23 and the white #12 is #19. The files dgtpicom and dgtpicom.so need updated. There is information and links on this forum concerning this.

Thank you for the info!
In addition to optical or practical reasons are there also technical reasons for connecting the clock directly to the PI? As far as I understand the Raspby gets slowed down by the changes in the .ini files.
