I want to find reliable and cost effective vertical connectors that can hold
a small size board* by itself, being SMD and reasonably compact but not too
expesive for a 100 pairs buy. Any pin number between between 20-40 is ok,
frequency and current requirements are <20Mhz and <100mA respectively.

I wanted to hear on any particular recommendation you can do, from the many
Mouser, Farnell or Digikey offer is difficult to know which may be the best
option.

TIA

* Small size board here means something equal or smaller than 50mmx100mm,
with no particular bulky components on it.

Check out the surface mount headers/receptacles at Digikey and
elsewhere. Rabbit semiconductor uses them to hold many of their core
modules, although they generally provide another method to secure
them, they don't always. The 3600 and 3700 use standard 0.1" headers,
and customers are advised to use cable ties or silicone adhesive to
further secure the module.

They are available in surface mount models, and aren't terribly
expensive. Cheaper if you buy in quantity from the manufacturer.

I've become a fan of Hirose DF3 and DF13 connectors lately (from Digikey),
because of their small size and low cost. Don't remember the current
capacity offhand though. The datasheet shows many configurations available
of SMT, through hole, board, wire, etc, and digikey carries wires with
pre-crimped pins for it.

DF13 seems to be right on target, they are rated 100mA and are reasonably
small and price is also right. So if you are happy with them and no more
specific suggestions, I will probably go ahead with them.

Quick question on capacitance: did you see any funny behaviour on these
connectors with moderate frequency <20Mhz?

Thanks

To date, I haven't used them for any signals that high in frequency.

Cheers,
-Neil.
