It will not recognise any of my USB flash drives, my 256MB is reported
as 'Connected to Hub' and that is all, my dodgy 8GB is just not
recognised.
To cap it all, without thinking I opened up MPLAB which promptly
erased the demo program.
Gives me a chance to look at the firmware I suppose and work out why
it doesn't like my flash drives before reprogramming the board.

I do not think it supports 8GB card. Some of the flash
drive does enumerate as a hub and I think that is the case
of your 256MB card. So in that case, it is not supported.
Corsair Flash Voyager is one example of the flash drive
which enumerates as a hub first. If you can read the
dmesg output of Linux, you will know this.

I do not have the board but I believe Microchip will provide the
demo program's source and hex file with the boards. You
can always reprogram the demo hex file.
On the other hand, Microchip's USB stack has improved
dramatically, still it has a lot of room for improvement as well.
For example, the host stack supports HID keyboard but
not USB composite device. Yet many multimedia keyboards
are USB composite device.

I never realised that a flash drive might identify itself as a hub.
I've already reloaded the firmware, I just hadn't quite expected MPLAB
to auto erase the firmware.
