Good day to all.

Not sure if this is EE or OT - but here goes:

We recently starting using a web-host provider called
www.webhost4life.com . Their prices are incredibly good and they
have MS SQL available - apparently we need that for something called
DotNetNuke.

The web site stuff is sorta OK - it takes 9 or 10 seconds for our web
page to load when we surf to it. Its reasonably quick after that
initial load delay. That said - our old web host was much, much
quicker and that is something I want to look at.

But their email handling is lousy. It often takes an hour or more
for email messages to be sent or received. Quite frankly, that's
just not acceptable.

So: I'm now looking for a new web-host provider. Cost is a factor
but reliability is more important.

FWIW - I'm based in Canada.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

I have a few sites on Dreamhost and I like them. No extra charge for
running virtual domains. They are in California.

I think they are #4 in size as far as hosting. And they don't run slutty
Super Bowl ads.

Cheerful regards,

Dreamhost is the BEST. Very cheap hosting and very reliable and very
flexible. You even get ssh so its really easy to backup and stuff. And
you can easily make mirrors and stuff of your/other files. Unlimited
subdomains/mysql.

Dwayne,
If you care so much about the email, please take a look of the ixwebhosting,
http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.dspmain

It is relatively cheap and lots of "free" (fancy) functions are available, you got dedicated IP too.
We have been used the email system ever since we moved the web from our own web server to it, so far, no much trouble on emails yet. (You can shoot couple of email to my company email (on my web page) for test purpose)

As of the web host capability, the 1-800 phone waiting is very long, online chat is available but you got very slow response all the time, online ticket will normally be responded within 24 hours.

We do got couple of issue last year, when our web was hosted on one server, it may go down several time in a week due to some high traffic web based forum hosted in the same server. I create a web ticket asking for a solution, and they moved my web to another server which seems much stable now (the IP address is changed too), and I got one extra free month web host service.

We don't have anything fancy on our web design, so I don't have much to say. (All my web are just a few text and picture, and a few other simple staff like paypal, Google analysis, YPN, Adsense, etc.)

So, take a look and let us know what you have found.

Web Of Trust (WOT) flags them as yellow:
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/webhost4life.com

I'm not really sure what that means other than they merge together several
website monitoring services in their ratings. I just starting using their
FF add-on a couple of days ago so no really good feeling yet.

The topic is of immediate interwest to me as well:-))

BTW, it sounds like one of your two DNS servers are broken... The
symptom described with both the mail and the web is pretty common for a
DNS breakage ... which is also easy to fix.

What domain are we talking about?

I could see TECH maybe, but what warped logic can possibly justify this as
EE?

I used to have several sites with Pair before I got my own box. I was
very happy with the service, although that was several years ago now.

I run a small hosting service, but do not provide MSSQL. I can provide
both hands-off hosting for websites, and complete virtual machines.
Drop me a line if you want details. Thanks.

I use Godaddy. Haven't had any problems. Uptime >>99%. Even the basic
plan has enough space and bandwidth to make a reasonable mark for anyone.
Rates are reasonable too. Check them out.

I used Godaddy and left them because they did not offer everything I
wanted. Maybe they have improved.

GoDaddy is one of the few companies I will never give money to. They
actively work against net neutrality (they gave $4 million to "Senator
Series of Tubes" Ted Stevens) and they have slutty TV ads, like this
"beaver" ad:

I switched two years ago (using lunarpages now). They were overpriced, and
not flexible enough for what I wanted to do.

We give them money, regularly (most of our domain names are registered
through them). Back in 2002-2003 their prices were 1/3 of the competition,
and the registration process was very easy.

One thing is for sure: I would not want to work for GoDaddy. Their CEO
creeps me out.

Google for "ixwebhosting virus" or 'ixwebhosting "yahoo counter"'

Last May they had a massive virus attack, and their response was to utterly
ignore it. I had four Windows boxen nailed by that virus, and spent days doing
clean-up. Emails to their "abuse" address bounced.

They're still blocked (inbound and outbound) on my home firewall -- every
single virus infection on one of my PCs in the past year has been traced back
to an infected server at iX.

Seriously? I'd sooner poke my eyes out than deal with them.
