I would also add the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. The 5 book series begins with the Book of Three. Great books for boys and girls. Actually, most anything by Lloyd Alexander is great. He was influenced by George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis.

I have a lot of classics, and my boys absolutely loved both the original stories (NOT the Disney versions) of Bambi, Peter Pan, and Wizard of Oz... Honestly Bambi was very emotional and was their favourite! The Arabian Knights was another favourite.

An interesting list. Although the George Henty books are geared a bit more toward the higher end of the 6-12 year range, I would still include them here. They don't seem to be as well-known as some of these others, which is unfortunate, imo. If you haven't seen them, check out a few. Kindle versions are usually free on amazon.

Ha! Captain Underpants indeed. Our boys loved James Fitzhenry's El Cid: God's own Champion. Thoroughly Catholic. His other books are wonderful, too, especially 12 to adult. They're just bigger books. Thank you for posting your list!

Why aren't these for girls? I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm getting more and more ticked off at this gender thing the more I try to shop for her.. My daughter likes dinosaurs and dragons, she likes building things, science, getting dirty, climbing all over.. She likes paw parole, T.M.N.Turtles.. And other things that continue to be labeled as "for boys". ...
