This coming winter I'm going to be working with an indoor drumline as a visual tech. I've never worked with an indoor line before. As a matter of fact, I've not really done much visual with any kind of drumline before! I've done visual with winds in marching band and drum corps (I'm a trumpet player), but drumline marching is a bit different of course. Not to mention that the indoor drumline activity is a bit different than MB or DC. This indoor line will be in its first year of existence. Is there anyone out there that might be able to offer some advice? Like crab stepping, for instance, or how the winter drumline activity is different than outdoor? Thanks!
indoor drill is more about staging than form development. form development is a nice touch on top, but you have to start with good staging. as for crabbing - it's all about HEIGHT. as soon as they bend their knees, or touch their heels, or drop their weight, it's over. STRONG legs and a STRONG core are required. weak legs and core will make their drums bounce around as they move, which will make playing well even more difficult.
This! Other than that I recommend any body you try to program you attempt yourself with a drum on before asking the members to try it... having that drum(s) hanging off the front of you severely limits what you can program and what will look good.
All these tips sound great. I would also add on to review as many videos of WGI indoor lines as possible and take notes on the various styles of marching you see... Some groups use toe-down styles, some use variations of roll step techniques, etc. (I've seen many groups use toe-down, though, for indoor). Use what you think will work best for your kids and the style of your show. It's also helpful to keep in mind that indoor drill is usually a lot more hectic than corps (smaller spaces to travel + fast tempi ='s A LOT of "running", lol). Good Luck with your new indoor line!
I'm the same. Brass player teching indoor percussion. You only have to learn a handful of basic principals about crabbing. . .many of which have already been discussed here. You can also chat with a battery person that you trust, but be able to articulate crab technique the same way you would traditional tech for a hornline.
Take the advice above about the crab technique and do your best to perfect it at a normal stepsize. This is all that will be required of a first year line in Michigan AAA or even Michigan AA. Focus on the raw basics and perfect the technique and you will have done your job for this year. That might not sound very exciting .. but that's how it works in MCGC.
SoundSport gives your band members the opportunity to shine at the same event as touring DCI corps! Encourage your students to let their imaginations soar as you guide them in preparing a 5 to 7 minute non-adjudicated performance with a special focus on entertaining the audience. Choose an adjudicated performance and three judges will evaluate music, visual and overall impression on a stage that measures 30 yards wide by 20 yards deep. All instruments and ages are permitted so you can even create an all-star ensemble featuring your students along with instructors, parents and alumni in this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
It's simple! Prepare a 1.5 to 2 minute drum line solo (battery percussion only). Then, toss in some visuals, stunts and stick tricks and you're good to go. It's that easy! You can even use material from your winter line or fall show, or if you're feeling adventurous, produce something just for this event!

Ellie, ever the enthusiast, embraced the rain with excitement. As a professional photographer, I always look for these unique opportunities to create stunning visuals that stand out. The dramatic clouds and soft, diffused light from the overcast sky provided a perfect backdrop for her vibrant personality and dynamic poses.
Dramatic clouds rolled in on the shoot day, and the rain began to fall. Instead of rescheduling, Ellie embraced the weather, turning an ordinary session into something extraordinary. The overcast sky and raindrops created a stunning backdrop, enhancing the visual impact of her senior pictures.
Michelle does an AMAZING job. She is much more than your average photographer. She really understands lighting and her pictures stand out. We have had Michelle do Senior pictures for our kids as well as family pictures. She is fabulous!
Wow! You and Ellie were the perfect duo for fabulous drumline and color guard senior pictures! Ellie rocks and you really brought out her sprit in these great senior portraits. What a beautiful young lady!
I love how you incorporated her drumline and colorguard props into her senior session. I just know she has spent so much time practicing and performing! The collage of her older photos with her senior photo is precious! How cool that her parents have these memories in photos!

The Palm Beach State Drumline was created as a way to increase school spirit by performing at various campus activities and sporting events, as well as community events. The group is comprised of standard marching instruments including snare, tenors, bass drums and cymbals that perform mostly original material in addition to various arrangements from other ensembles. Currently, the group is open to PBSC students from all campuses, and is offered as a non-credit activity.
The Palm Beach State Drumline's goal is to create an exciting musical experience for audience members through energetic and compelling performances. As ambassadors for the College, we represent all students by setting the highest standards and maintaining a level of achievement that displays professionalism, talent, and pride in our activity. As the group continues to grow, we will continue to push the standards and commit ourselves to nothing less than excellence. One of the most unique aspects of our program is our fundamental & development system that is in place to assist students of all levels gain the skills necessary to excel on the drumline.
The snare and tenor are the primary foundation of the drumline. The snare & tenors play the most complex music parts, and have the most demand for accuracy and precision. At Palm Beach State, we march up to 6 snares and 3 tenors.
The bass drum and cymbal sections are the driving force that supports the other voices of the drumline, and provide the visuals as well as impact and depth that helps the drumline be heard from across campus. The bassline requires a good understanding of math and timing, and the cymbal section requires some strength and the ability to perform high energy movements.
These training sessions are the best way to get a feel and understanding for what the drumline is like, and what some of the expectations and styles are. These dates are spread throughout the year, and may be found on the calendar link.
Shutter angle in film and shutter speed in digital can be very powerful tools to assist in putting the viewer in a unique scene, creating visual tension, and creating an immersive feeling. This technique has been used for decades, but when Spielberg and Kaminsky did it in Saving Private Ryan, the world was introduced to its majesty. It really brought the technique to the forefront and after this, many filmmakers started using it just because they could.
