I learned something (and have an issued with) about Picasa and Dropbox.

I am NOT using PicasaStarter (yet).

I have Picasa on my PC “watching” the Camera Upload folder in My DropBox. When I make an edit to a picture in Picasa – the new image is saved to the "Camera Uploads Folder" and Picasa makes a “PicasaOriginals” folder under Camera Uploads in Dropbox.

The problem is that the web and IOS DropBox photo viewers are displaying what is in the “originals” folder rather than the revised image. Can PicasaStarter help with this?

Thanks....Jon Battle

Hello Jon,
PicasaStarter cannot help with this.

But i don't understand what is going wrong. Is the saved, edited jpg not seen by dropbox nor uploaded or are both uploaded but do you only want to see one or ???

Regards,
P

The original image is being uploaded to picasaoriginals. The edited image is being also uploaded. The Dropbox photo viewer is showing the original image not the edited one. If you use Dropbox "files" option you can see both versions. The flaw is in Dropbox. Is this clearer? Thx

Yes, apparently I understood you correctly the first time as well, but the behaviour is so weird (in my opinion) that I thought there had to be a misunderstanding from my side...

I'd suppose that the dropbox image viewer would just show any jpg in you dropbox, but apparently it doesn't show the jpg pictures that were saved by Picasa?

Could you try copying such a saved picture to a new folder in your dropbox (one that doesn't have any subfolders and see what that does?

Another thing to try: in the picasastarter site there is a section with custom picasa buttons... and one of them is called exportCleaned or something similar. Could you try using that button on such a saved picture... it will remove all exif, iptc, xmp metadata from the jpg... possibly the dropbox viewer shokes on some metadata it doesn't support correctly...

Yet another thing you could try if the previous ones didn't bring clarity: open the jpg that isn't working in MSPaint and save it again as a new jpg... and see if that one is recognized

What Dropbox Photo viewer is doing is this:

IF it finds the same image twice - once in Camera Uploads and once in ".picasaoriginals" under the Camera Upload folder - which is what will happen if I open and image in Picasa, edit it, and save it......when it finds BOTH - it displays the one from ".picasaoriginals" and NOT the edited version. If it were the other way around, Id be fine.

I have written Dropbox and told them that ".picasaorioginals" should be view as a hidden folder and ignore when it comes time to display.

In all honesty - Im leery about the DropBox Photo viewer  - there is no tagging, no searching, just a pure "timeline" - with 100's/1000's of pix - a timeline is not enough - so I am on the verge of dropping that option

Is google planning on a Picasa update - the allows putting your images on Google drive, editing them from you main PC (that contains Picasa) and then using a web based Picasa Viewer with search on tags etc?

Hello,
For the plans for Picasa... Google never tells anything beforehand about their plans... they like surprises ;-)... so I don't have a clue...
