This Google Group is a Forum for discussions and Help with
PicasaStarter.
PicasaStarter is a tiny application that provides a solution to a
couple of shortcomings of Picasa, the image organisation and editing
application by Google. Some shortcommings are:

- The database with pictures can't be shared among different users
(not on the same computer, not in a network).

- You cannot choose where to put the database (eg. putting them on a
network drive or NAS would be practical).

- You can only use/have one database per user, choosing between
multiple databases is not possible.

There is also a user guide at:

I was rooting around trying to figure out how to easily move my Picasa pictures (about 30 gig) over to Google Drive without fouling up the database and came across the PicasaStarter.  Had not heard it even existed.  I'll come back to PicasaStarter later for the sharing aspects but am more interested in the tools I saw in the user guide, like moving the photo collection.  I don't see any place where I can actually get these tools. How can I get the other tools?

At this point my database can stay where it is.  I just want to move all the folders and keep the albums in the database.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
Just curious....
I know your post if fairly old, but I'm coming back to Picasa after trying Google Photos & Google Drive.
I only do photos, no docs, or multiple devices - so can't see any use for GD - for me!  Your thoughts?

You say 'move' Picasa pics - not copy.  Will they no longer be on Picasa and is that the only way to get them to GP?  Little confused since I understood Picasa was not pics but databases of original pics.  Or is it, when you save, after changes to that database, its a stand alone pic?

Any comments appreciated - the Picasa Starter 'answers' are sometimes too convoluted & technical to do us Seniors a lot of good!!

Hey!  I'm old, but I'm slow!!;)

Thx!

Jim,

My Picasa is still out there but I have not put anything new into the database for a while.
I've switched to Google Photo's.  While it's not the same as a database (Picasa), it has improved enough for my needs over time and continues to get better.
My primary reason for switching is data security.  I was spending too many resources on keeping all of my data and photo's backed up in case a drive failure.
Once I made the decision to pay $24 per year for the 100 gig of Drive space I never looked back from the cloud.

I bought my wife a Chromebook several years ago.  Gone were the constant Windows issues.  I'm not ready to make the jump yet.  Printing and scanning and one or two Windows programs are keeping me linked to a PC.  Newer Chromebooks can be made dual boot with Linux.  That's my next step to see if I can resolve printing, scanning and the few Windows programs I need to deal with.

To answer your questions, Picasa is a database.  It does not contain the pictures, it points to their location on the hard drive.  If you "move" a picture external to the Picasa program the database will loose the link to it.  You can copy all of your pictures to GPhoto's and have them in both places.  There is also a way of keeping photo's on your hard drive and synced to Google Photos so they are are in both places and maintained.  If you want to give this a try get back to me for tips.

Dave

Bruce,

Keeping your hard drive and Google Drive in sync is easy with Backup and Sync from Google.
Actually I just rejuvenated my Picasa 3 using it.  You'll need to buy extra storage if your backing up more than your free 16 gig.

1)  I assume you have all of your photo's on your hard drive in a organised set of folders, have a Google account and are using Google Drive.  Leave your folder structure alone, if you move things around, you'll loose your link in the Picasa database thus losing albums etc.

2)  Install Backup and Sync from Google.

3)  Configure Backup and Sync to sync the photo folders on your hard drive.   This will sync the photo's to Google Drive (you'll find them under Computers in Drive).  Photo storage is free for high quality.  Check out all the settings.

4)  As you add new photo's to your hard drive in Picasa, they'll automatically sync to Google Drive (and Google Photo's if you have that setting turned on).

I'm pretty sure the info I'm giving you is accurate.  I actually changed my folder structure some time ago (switching to Google Photo's) and lost all my albums etc.  in Picasa.  With backup and sync I could have left them in Picasa but I'm OK moving forward with Google Photo's now.  Let me know if you run into any issues with what I've told you.

Good luck,
Dave
