Hi Gang,

Trying out our temporary mailing list.

Appreciate it if you can update us on what open source software you
are using for GIS/RS and milestones, problems, etc.

I need to update this on our OSGeo wiki page
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Pacific_Islands_Chapter

For your comments/updates.

cheers,

Ed

While at SOPAC I was working with Franck Martin on developing the mapping component of tikiwiki CMS. Im not sure who is continuing the development of this component as Ive have discontinued it after I left SOPAC. The component was good as we tend to introduce a bit of AJAX into it but still the fact that this component depends on the huge data being transferred from server to client makes it unsuccessful. To date this component has been replaced by google map's API. The advantages is that we can load all maps from google and integrate it into any application. Google has used cloud computing before this became well known and this makes google map a success. The only disadvantage here is that you need to load your GIS layers on google's server before you are able to call these in your application. The current version of this API is version 3 and it introduces a bit of polyline, marking etc which is defined on codes.

This is what I am going to present of GIS/RS conference.

Etu,

Tonnes of thanks for this. About the SOPAC mapserver project with other Pacific Islands, I left SOPAC and there were still no clear direction where it is heading.

At the moment, Sachin is working on Geonode and seems like thats where SOPAC is heading.

cheers,

Ed

Hey Etu and Ed,

Yes we have adopted Geonode. To see one example of how we are using it to expose GIS datasets, please take a look @ http://paris.sopac.org

I will be presenting on a SOPAC-wide Geonode at this years GIS conference.

Regard,
Sachin
