ANNOUNCEMENTS
SPECIAL THANKS: I’m overwhelmed by your gracious gifts of thanks at my departure. Thank you to Pastor Singer for your prayers for my well-being. A special thank you to the congregation for the lovely glass plaque expressing your thanks to me and for the framed picture of Peace in Christ.
I am grateful for the many opportunities to serve the Lord and you at Peace in Christ. We never do things for expressions of gratitude, but when they are given, they’re appreciated and humbling.
God’s presence is so evident at Peace in Christ. I pray for you that God will continue to bless you and that you would keep growing.
Thank you also for the beautiful and tasty cake served after church. You are a gracious and loving congregation. Continue serving Jesus and each other!
With love,
Jean Samuel

THANKS FROM KENYA
Dear friends at Peace in Christ,
Thank you for your recent contribution to God’s work at Neema Lutheran Theological College at Matongo. Your support is helping us to prepare a growing number of students for the growing churches in East Africa. We appreciate our faithfulness and generosity.
New and returning students will be on campus in a few weeks. Meanwhile Linda and I have been to Rwanda where I spent a few days teaching about worship to a group of pastors and other workers.
Just yesterday, I got to lay the first stone of the foundation as work on our new chapel building goes forward. Linda is visiting with students who have been on campus to learn English, in order to help their spoken English to improve. Today I will be working on the chapel schedule for the coming semester and I hope to receive a shipment of books for the students. A week from today we will be on the way to Malawi to visit and see the work of three interns. We will return right as classes are starting.
You can see that your gifts are being put to use. God’s blessings to all you are doing there.

YOUR GENEROSITY IS APPRECIATED!
Dear friends at Peace in Christ,
Thank you for your recent generous contribution to God’s work here at Matongo. Classes are now in session and we have the largest student body since I have been here. We have over 40 new students, 20 studying to be pastors, 7 studying to be evangelists, and 14 studying to be deaconesses.
Last weekend we celebrated graduation, after those graduating finished their internships. It was a happy exciting time for those students and their families. We are happy to have many students and activities on campus again.
God’s blessings also to all you are doing there.

FOCUSING ON STEWARDSHIP
Luke 14:11 – “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
The kingdom of God is always upside down and backwards like this. We must die in order to live. We must be humbled so we can be exalted. It’s like this with giving as well. When we give away, then we receive much more than we bargained for: peace of mind, contentment, joy.

ABOUT LAST WEEK. . .
On September 30, ladies from all over the area met at Peace In Christ to crochet, knit, and sew items for Hospitals, Nursing Homes, and anywhere there is a need. These items include, but are not limited to, Baby caps in all sizes, Chemo caps, Shawls, Lap robes, and Stuffed toys.
Two new items were added this year: Fleece balls and Survival bracelets. The fleece balls are used in therapy to build strength in the hand and wrist. Survival bracelets are sent to deployed military members and can be used in a number of ways.
Participants also helped to fill the Food Bank box here at the church, and there were several who also donated socks for the needy.
We greatly appreciate the support from Peace In Christ, and hope to sponsor many more such events!
~Marie Geisinger
FOCUSING ON STEWARDSHIP
Matthew 22:40 – “On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
We serve God and our neighbor through the various vocations (holy callings) that God has given us. We do not need to go searching for good works or inventing our own: God has given us roles to fill in home, church and society and that will keep us plenty busy! When we seek to fulfill the duties of these vocations in a spirit of faith, God-pleasing works are the result.

FOCUSING ON STEWARDSHIP
Ephesians 4:24 – “Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
We have a new identity in Christ. Our old identity was in Adam; we were sinners, enemies of God, destined for death and destruction. But in Christ, we have a new identity: we are forgiven,
the children of God, cleansed, destined for life everlasting. These two identities continue to struggle as we exist in this fallen world. So St. Paul encourages us to “put on the new self” — to consciously cling to Christ in faith and claim our new identity
in Him. Coming to the Lord’s House, faithfully supporting the ministry, praying and reading Scripture daily — these are the works of the new self.

Isaiah 55:2 – “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?”
What Isaiah says here is reminiscent of what Jesus says about putting our earthly wealth in places “where moth and rust destroy” (Matt. 6:19). Where we put the money God has given us to manage says a lot about how we actually view life. What do your spending priorities say about what you think is truly important in life?

FOCUSING ON STEWARDSHIP
John 8:36 – “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
This Sunday we celebrate Reformation Day. Luther is rightly remembered as a champion of the Gospel — but he also called himself “the apostle of good works.” For only by being set free by the Gospel can we do good works. Jesus has set us free: His blood covers over our sins, and now we stand before God as His beloved children, invited to live our lives to His glory for the good of His kingdom.
REMEMBER: The time change is this weekend—“Fall Back” an hour on Saturday night!

========================
Stewardship means taking care of something that is not yours, but God’s. We’re all called to be stewards, not spectators. It may be tempting to rely on the same few people to take care of all the details involved in the life of the church, but that’s not what God has in mind.
If you haven’t already, please check out our new STEWARDSHIP bulletin board. It gives a snapshot of some of the things that are needed right now at Peace in Christ:
Church Cleaning: In years past, we’ve had janitorial help from the local SUCCESS program, which provides job training for high school students with special needs. This year, we have not been able to line someone up.
The church is God’s house, and we are stewards who take care of it for Him. Like any other home, lots of things need doing around God’s house:
AFTER CHURCH EACH WEEK
ANY TIME
If you’re willing to help with any of these tasks on a one-time (or regular) basis, please contact Dave Hofflinger (301-996-9039).
Board of Property: Our church Bylaws state that the Board of Property shall take charge of maintenance of all congregational property, with the understanding that they manage the property as stewards.
Church maintenance isn’t a one-person job!
Are you willing to help with. . .
. . . then you are cordially invited to join the Board of Property! Please contact Dave Hofflinger (301-996-9039).
Ushers/Greeters: When it comes to keeping a church service running smoothly, ushers are very important people! Have you noticed how they. . .
If several teams of ushers are in place, no one has to commit to being on duty every week. Gregg Oberhaus (240-315-9072) coordinates our ushers—he would love to help you “up your STEWARDSHIP game”!
PS--You don’t have to dress up to be an usher!
Offering Counters: Every Sunday after church, a team of two faithful stewards sit down in the library to count the day’s offerings and prepare a bank deposit. They follow a detailed set of directions prepared by the Financial Secretary.
Whether you’re willing to help just one week a month, or to commit to a whole month at a time, your help will be appreciated!
Hope Benjamin (301-695-7496) coordinates the teams.
Altar Guild: The Altar Guild is responsible for setting up the altar for Communion each week and taking care of the items or utensils involved. They’re also the ones who change the banners with the season or holiday.
As Lutherans, we emphasize the importance of “Word and Sacrament.” If you’d like to be part of the team that makes the “Sacrament” part possible, consider joining the Altar Guild. It’s an especially sacred form of Stewardship.
Gregg Oberhaus (240-315-9072) can tell you more about what it means to serve in the Altar Guild.

WHAT IS ADVENT?
The word “Advent” means “coming.” The four weeks preceding Christmas are a time of spiritual reflection, preparation, anticipation, waiting and hope. During Advent we focus on Jesus’ three “comings.”
† His coming as an infant--
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
† His coming to us in Word and Sacrament--
“Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Luke 21:33
† His coming on the last day--
“At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because redemption is drawing
near.” Luke 21:27,28
The Advent wreath contains four candles. On the first Sunday in Advent, only one candle on the Advent wreath is lit during the worship service. Each evening at home, during the first week (perhaps before dinner), only one candle is lit.
Beginning with the second Sunday in Advent, two candles are then lit, and another each succeeding week until all four are lit. The successive lighting of the candles helps us picture our growing anticipation of the celebration of Christ’s birth. On Christmas Day, a fifth candle is placed in the center of the wreath. This candle is white and is referred to as the Christ candle.
ADVENT TRADITIONS
The origins of the Advent wreath are found in the folk traditions of Europe. During the cold winter darkness, people gathered wreaths of evergreens and lighted fires as a sign of hope in a coming Spring and renewed light. Christians kept this popular tradition alive, and by the 16th Century, Catholics and Protestants throughout Germany used these symbols to celebrate their Advent hope in Christ, the everlasting Light.
The wreath is made of evergreens joined together to form a circle. This circle reminds us of God’s unending love for us, and how our life in him is ongoing and eternal.
What do the candles mean?

Dear friends at Peace in Christ, thank you for your recent gift to God’s work here at Matongo. I wish I could send you some of our beautiful warm weather in return. Your support is helping our work to continue, which it is. I am now in the second week of an intensive course for men who are teachers or have other professions and want to become pastors. They come for classes when the other schools are on break. They don’t do midweek Advent worship here but instead this is also the time of year when many churches have four day “synods” for teaching and singing. Last Saturday, I was invited to teach about the sacraments at a church that was packed with over a thousand people. Meanwhile our other students are home with their families, but many are also helping to lead Christmas worship. May God’s gifts also give you and your family great joy in this Christmas season.

Note from Grant Burnham (one of the seminarians on our prayer list):
"Prayers for sustenance through my academics would be appreciated. The classes and activities are enjoyable and thought-provoking, but the intensity of the program is sometimes a double-edged sword as I work to take care of both academic and personal responsibilities. It leads me to think of the quote attributed to Martin Luther, though it is probably apocryphal, that "I have so much to do that I shall have to spend the first three hours [of the day] in prayer." Even though Luther likely never said this, I believe the sentiment is a good one for any Christian, and especially those training for or already in ministry. We don't succeed on the basis of our own strength or ability, though we must definitely apply ourselves to the tasks we have been given. Rather, God is the one who ultimately carries us through the work we are given to do, forming and leading us through our work. Feel free to share this with your church as well, it is a great encouragement to know that there are Christians halfway across the country praying for me!”

Dear friends at Peace in Christ, thank you for your recent contribution to God’s work here at Matongo Lutheran Theological College. We are now over half way through the semester. Mid term exams have revealed which students are doing well and which ones are struggling because of their knowledge of English or other issues. There are many challenges for all of them, including concerns for family back home, their own health, studying when the electricity has gone off, etc.. But they continue to work hard and God continues to provide and give endurance. What you have helped to provide is a great blessing to them and, in turn, will make them able to be a blessing to their churches. God’s blessings to you also in this Lenten season as remember how God has helped us in our greatest need.

Go and Be Reconciled: What Does This Mean is a seminar that reflects on the biblical teaching of reconciliation while reviewing the six chief parts of Christian doctrine from Luther’s Small Catechism. This seminar will equip members and leaders alike to apply the Gospel message, that we cherish, using very practical tools taken from God’s Word so that they can live as “children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” (Phil. 2:15)
Equipped with these tools, members will be ready to respond to conflict in a biblical manner that glorifies God and serves other people. This seminar is being led by Rev. Matt Sorenson and Mrs. Tina McGuffey who have over twenty years of combined experience walking with congregations through conflict to reconciliation in Christ. The seminar will be offered July 8 and 9 from 6 - 9 PM. Attendees of the seminar will then have the opportunity to schedule individual meetings with the reconcilers.

Food will be provided each night; if you haven’t already, please sign up and let us know you’re planning to attend.

DECEMBER ANNIVERSARY 26 – John & Gwen Nolte |
STEWARDSHIP. . . Let’s think about it!!
A steward is someone who manages resources FOR SOMEONE ELSE. As Christians, we believe all that we have belongs, first and foremost, to God. Being a steward means acknowledging that we do not own resources like time, money, and other gifts--God does. We are entrusted with managing those things on God's behalf. How can we make sure that our priorities align with God's?
When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because redemption is drawing near.” Luke
21:27,28

STEWARDSHIP. . . Let’s think about it!!
