Greetings,

I have a client with a Story and Clark grand model 158, that has “Made by Yamaha” on the plate. The serial number is 901360. the Atlas says that Yamaha made these pianos in the mid to late 70’s for them. However, the serial number doesn’t match anything. Story and Clark numbers don’t match at all. If I use the number as a Yamaha number it would be 1969. The client says her parents bout it new in the 1980’s.

I did find a number stamped on the action and the keyslip. It was 1983531. The action also had G2 stamped on the front. Possibly from the Yamaha G2 action?

Anyway, anyone have any ideas on the actual birth date of this piano? I’m thinking it’s probably 1969 but I’m not positive.

Rob. I would go with the serial number. Customers have vague memories of when pianos were purchased, and/or might have been told the piano was new when in fact it was a used piano.

I’m good with that.

I guess what I’m trying to clarify is that a Story and Clark grand made by Yamaha uses a Yamaha serial number? I read all the fine print in the Atlas and googled some stuff but nothing is clarified other than Yamaha made them in the 1970’s.

Gee Rob,

Why not talk to YAMAHA? That'd be my first choice.<G> They've always been helpful. (one of the few imo.)

Best,

Joe

I would if it weren't Sunday. :-) trying to get a value for a client trying to sell. I thought the many experts, such as yourself, would've known this trivial fact.

Rob,

It's supposed to be "A day of rest". Will another day or so make that big of a difference? I kind of doubt it. Time for a Brewski, some fancy-smancy cheese and some BBQ!<G> (Or if you are the other persuasion, go find some grass to chew on or smoke.<G>)

By who's decree is it "Supposed" to be?

Joe,

By this time tomorrow I'll be halfway to Newark. Then it's off to Panama City, Panama on Tuesday. Don't get home until late on Wednesday. Trying to get work done before I lose my internet. :-)

Hi, Rob !
Yamaha did built Grand Pianos for Story-Clark in the mid- to late 1970-th...
I did work for one of Los Angeles dealerships, selling them, many of them..
 Then, the deal was over...
Yamaha had discontinued this policy and built pianos only under their name...
As far ,as I remember, the serial numbers go by Yamaha numbers, not Story-Clark,
or there were dual numbers.......
#1983531 is the most accurate,mid-1975............
If this  does not satisfy your client, let them count the annual rings on the soundboard and this will give them more accurate age, even month, week, even AM or PM hours it was built....
Hope, it reinforces all other information you got from all those brilliant minds on the List....
Best wishes..
 Isaac

Hi Isaac,

Thanks for the help! The number on the plate was 901360, which if a Yamaha number would’ve been 1969.  But all the records say they only built them in the mid to late 1970’s.  The 1983531 number was on the action and the keyslip at both ends, of all places, on the inside piece of wood that interfaces with the cheek block. I agree that this matches with a 1975 number.

Why they put that other number on the plate that doesn’t match either manufacturer is beyond me.  :-)

Thanks for the ring counting ideas!  I’m looking forward to your TTT article in the journal about how to count them.  ;-)
