Subject: Faventia barrel piano

A customer asked me to tune a barrel piano. I have never seen one but I told him if it had tuning pins and strings I would give it a whirl. He dropped it of at my shop today. I don't see a problem tuning it but thought I would ask if anyone has tuned these before or if there is anything I should know about these pianos. Also how rare are these?

Put your queries on this gizmo to the Mechanical Music Digest. Someone on it likely has one.

Several videos on YouTube. Late 1800's apparently. I'd love to see/hear before and after tuning videos. Also, with no keys, please let us know how you actually tuned it.

This could easily be a more recent reproduction of earlier barrel pianos which were not uncommon in Europe a hundred years ago - they were used for busking. Normally you have to be careful tuning the bass because the scale is not chromatic.  But this one has a cheat sheet for tuning it.
These are kind of clangy noise machines, often without dampers, so there is only so much refinement you can attain in the tuning.  The hammers are usually spring loaded, so if you pull the hammer back and let it fly, it will strike the strings.
Have fun Jack.

Not to steal Ron N's thunder, but it is a common word in the English language, and one that every musician I know understands. For those in need  of an enlargement of their vocabulary, two second google search will reveal all...

JG,
Ohmaygawd! Another Vocabulary maven! Yikes! Yes, I did look it up and it's definition was clear as mud. No mention of Street Musician. Another example of internet b.s.! i.e. don't believe anything on the internet until you actually crack a book. Which I did and lo and behold..."street musician". Not having sunk that low, (flack suit on), I'd never heard the term, so back off please and sorry for my stupidity.

This is age of information, where just about any knowledge is available at our fingertips, a few clicks away.

I often run across a word I am unsure about.  Instead of publicly displaying my ignorance and bothering people to elucidate me, I simply google it for an accurate definition.  Usually, I also find interesting related information too - the historical derivation, different uses in different parts of the word, alternate spellings, synonyms, antonyms etc. wow!

I can do it all by myself, without any grown-ups to help me!    :^)

I looked this one up, Google, and got a page full of hits that
immediately, clearly, and succinctly defined it without any further
action. I/m certainly not above using a dictionary, but this was quicker.
