Is this Kawai grand salvageable?  During the hurricane, a window blew out out and it got sprayed with water.  I'm trying to decide whether it's worth bothering to pick up this piano.

This window blew out and water sprayed all over the piano

Water got on the bridge on this area and it is badly out of tune in this area.

Soundboard crack in the bass area

Bass strings turning green

Water ran down inside the case

Action seems to have fared relatively well

I’m sure it could be salvaged, but would the cost justify it?  A good used KG-2 can be bought pretty reasonably, and a new Kawai GX-2 could likely be bought for not much more than the cost of a full rebuild of this one.  And it is a rather hugely improved piano now.

So, economically speaking, I’d say no.  It needs a full rebuild.

I'd say it needs a full rebuild.

However, is it possible to take parts from it? For instance, legs, lyre, lid and lid sticks, bench, music desk, etc. I salvaged stuff from a water damaged grand and have been able to sell stuff to other folks who needed it. And the action might be nice to have around. Could use it for chapter workshops?

This has a polyester finish. If water got inside the veneer, and it started to buckle up, there would be no way for you to repair the damage and make the poly repairs, unless you are very good at doing that. Other than that, it needs everything, including an action. Not counting the finish, it will cost you about $4K out of pocket for all the parts, etc. Is it worth it to you to do all the work, and sell it for maybe $7.5K?

Personally I wouldn't want to take a chance, just because of the potential damage to the case.
