Can anyone tell me what an H before the serial number denotes on a 1972 Yamaha U1?

Best regards,

David.

If the serial number begins with an "H", the piano was manufactured in Hangzhou, China.

Thanks for that, Paul.  However:

1) This piano is in the UK, and the lists on that site are for the US market.
2) This list only shows pianos being made in Hangzhou since 2004 and this is a 1972 piano, according to its serial number. (Ant yet, did Yamaha make the U1 model in 1972?)

Best regards,

David.

Sorry... I missed the "usa." part of the URL...
Not having any luck trying to find any serial number info on the uk.yamaha.com subdomain... I imagine you've tried that, anyhow...

Yeah!

It seems from searching elsewhere, that the letter "H" or other, to the left of the serial number, denotes the deisgn variant within the model, as they 'tweaked' the scale etc over time.

Best regards,

David.

The "H" designation on a U1 from that era indicated that manufacturing had made a small change from it's predecessor.  It usually meant something as minor as a scale change, or a beveled top, encased toe-blocks, etc.  This one was built in Japan, as were all the U series at that time.

Hi Mark, thank you for confirming this.  It's what I had worked out "by default" as it were!

Best regards,

David.

Hi David,
I have seen many U1Hs, they were made in Japan. If i remember correctly, the U1H hammers dont have the inner felt.
Best,
Lim
