I was reading about the new Raspberry Pi 4, and its support for v3 of libGLES, and wondering if pi3d may someday support the newer version (I believe its on v2 now if I’m not mistaken?)

I’ve written a custom photo frame app for the pi using pi3d (a terrific library by the way, great work!) and have always wanted it to support 4K natively, and am hoping libGLESv3 overcomes the texture limit of 2048 finally? Maybe that is a false hope.

Thanks!
Brian

Brian, Yes, at least I hope so too. I have been corresponding with Wolfgang Maennel (see here https://www.thedigitalpictureframe.com) about the pi3d_demos picture frame app (PictureFrame_new.py now has EXIF and MQTT functionality) and he mentioned that very subject again Yesterday. I placed an order for the RPi4 so I will test its 4K capacity once it arrives (Not that I have a 4K screen, but at least I can see if it runs)

I've updated pi3d so that it uses the 'new' GL driver if it's set in raspi-config; there needs to be a bit more tweaking to make it run full screen on X11 and various other things but it seems to work with the latest version of raspbian (buster).

It is possible to run two instances of pi3d at the same time as per http://pi3d.github.io/html/FAQ.html#display-size-greater-than-2048 but I've run into issues with very large image files.

Paddy

PS I would be interested to see what you've done using pi3d
