To the challenge organizers,
we are getting towards the end of the official phase so I started planning next steps and need some feedback on this. I have a couple of questions below:

As I understood, at least one member of every team needs to attend the conference in-person. However, the registration cost of US$825 is extremely high and there are no special prices for students. I am therefore probably not the only person considering to only attend one day of the conference for US$225.

1) Which day of the conference should we register for? In the schedule it seems like all challenge presentations are on Tuesday, but is there another event we would need to attend?

2) The hackathon is really a fantastic idea! Thank you for organizing this. Are there any additional costs related to attending the hackathon?

3) For the submission of the preprint, the challenge website says the deadline is September 15, the Cinc website says it is September 25. Could you please clarify this?

Thank you for your answer.

Dear Charlotte,

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful questions.

While we encourage everyone to attend the entire conference, we understand that costs are an issue, and we regret that the conference does not provide general discounts for students. (Unfortunately, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the costs of running a conference tend to be high right now, and many conferences are operating at a loss, which is not sustainable indefinitely. This doesn't help you as a conference attendee, but it may provide some context.)

1. All of the Challenge oral and poster presentations are on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Of course, we encourage everyone to attend the entire conference, but if you can only attend one day, then this is the day to attend -- especially if you are presenting your work for the Challenge!
2. There is no additional cost for attendees to attend the Hackathon.
3. The Challenge has an earlier preprint deadline than the rest of the conference so that we have time to provide feedback and the teams have time to update their preprints before the conference. In general, this feedback is intended to help everyone (1) describe their methods as much as possible and as clearly as possible, (2) report their results as consistently as possible, and (3) conform with the more general requirements for CinC papers:

Best,
Matt
(On behalf of the Challenge team.)
