It is poetic justice. Who else is better equipped to hear a sigh from billion light years away?

Dear 76Phys classmates and 74Phys alumni,
Thank you all for your concern on this matter. Let me just copy a mail that I sent to my colleague as a remark of mine to this event. And wish you all have a wonderful year of monkey. Chao, Shiuh

Thank you for your messages. If there is honor for the participation in this historical discovery, the honor belongs to Tsing Hua and IPT.
LSC asked every collaborator to distribute local press release synchronized with the main press conference held in Washington DC. There were some exaggeration and incorrection in Taiwan's press report which was beyond my control.
However, what I really like to share with you, as a scientist, is this indescribable feeling of happiness and fulfillment to witness the whole process of making a "big science". From scratches to final achievement, through the years, people in LIGO showed strong teamwork with loyalty, dedication, hard working, exceptional scientific quality, academic ethics, 100% rigorousness, and to my impressiveness, in this large organization technical discussion always goes in a true objective way and decision making in a democratic process ....., all the virtues intrinsic to a successful big scientific exploration, they got most. And of course, continuous, sufficient and even generous government funding was a necessity. I am lucky to spend several years before my retirement to learn from those people in LSC. I wish truely those qualities could one day be rooted in our own land.
Happy new year and best regards to you all
Chao, Shiuh

Hi Prof. Shiuh,This is Keyu, the current president of Tsing Hua alumni association of northern California. As a physics student, I am excited about this result. Congratulation for your achievement.I wonder if you have any travel plan like conference or vacation to Northern California in the near future? If so, I will like to invite you to give a talk about this science break through to our bay area alumni.Thank you,Keyu Pi (PHYS 02)

Dear Shiuh,Thank you for your modest reply which showed your passion and honestyas a TRUE scientist in EE Dept.No doubt that you and your team are "臺灣之光". :-)Taiwan's research level has jumped up a lot as compared with those days when we were at Tsing Hua.Our classmate Dr. Yang-Fang Chen at 台大物理系 also made remarkable progress on Nano Technology.
Another classmate Dr. Ming-Way Lee at 中興大學物理系 also published quite a few great research papers on applied physics.
Dear Shiuh,
We are so
glad for you. LIGO team in which you are part of it has achieved
remarkable milestone. The tiny, tiny voice from an event, far far away, and
LIGO team is able to listen and interpret it, which is very amazing.
Speaking of Relativity, I remembered we were required to take fundamental
Physics for the first two years in the college. Fundamental physics
course were divided into several topics of classical dynamics, statistics
dynamics, EM dynamic, quantum mechanics, ... and yes Relativity. Having
missed several classes due to sitting up too late playing bridge the previous
nights, some of us, me included, totally gave up the lecture being taught that
time. Until a new topic of Relativity started, we regrouped and came to
class on time, not only on time, we sit in the front role to show our refreshed
attitude toward that subject. That's how serious we wanted to learn
Relativity. Oh, that was a long long time ago. You seem to be the
only one left continuing actively in the pursuit of understanding the subject.
Pardon me
for sharing the following. Not long ago, Higgs particle, associated with
mass of very very small scale, and now the gravitation wave, associated with
mass of very very large scale, how amazing the universe is full of wonder. It keeps us fascinated of the creation since
the dawn of man’s history. Just as described in the Bible, over more than
three thousand years ago, that, "In the beginning, God created the heavens
and the earth." (Genesis, 1:1) and "The heavens declare the glory of
God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display
knowledge." (Psalm 19:1-2). Einstein must understand these
statements and try to interpret it in a way we appreciate as scientists.
Since LIGO verified his interpretation, more wonders will be revealed using
this technology. May we all appreciate the speech that the creator speaks
continuously and transcendentally.
Blessings!
Again,
congratulation to your remarkable achievement.

Dear Constance, Thank you for still remembering what said back in 2007. The hand-held breast cancer detector Wei and I developed is out of our lab and moving nicely towards clinics--It has been FDA approved last year and the company licensed the technology is currently conducting clinical trials in the US and South America with a trade name, iBE (intelligent breast exam). It is sensitive where mammography is not. Thus will be very useful for young western women (i.e., under 40) and virtually all Eastern Asian women.
Currently, Wei and I are working on a simple blood test for early cancer detection/cancer recurrence monitoring. Hopefully, I can this happening before I die. Best, Wan
