Dear all,

Thanks to my big brother Louis who retired from Taiwan's FAA (民航局) Sr. Director position for professor Chao's (趙煦物76) detailed research works about this 重力波發現 in Chinese.

It is easier for us to understand the gravitational wave history and the LIGO research projects with this link below.

Also thanks to Phys 74 學姊陳昱寧 who shed light with good explanation to us right after LIGO announced the discovery of the gravitational wave. She studied the General Relativity in her early graduate school days before switching to U Penn's material science major.

Although we may have switched majors to material science, electronic and electrical engineering, software, MBA, VC...etc., but deep in our hearts we still have the curiosity to quest the fundamentals as how universe was started from Physics point of view.

Thanks to Phys 74 for making the Tsing Hua astronomy telescope which we Phys 76 and later could use when we took prof. 沈君山's 天文物理. I heard 陳昱寧學姊及鄧延璋學長皆費心費力參與磨鏡造鏡過程.

Please check the link below to enjoy Prof. Shiuh Chao's 精彩專訪. :-)

Wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous Chinese New Year of Monkey.

祝 新春快樂, 萬事如意.:-)

Dear 76Phys classmates and 74Phys alumni,

Thank you all for your concern on this matter. Let me just copy a mail that I sent to my colleague as a remark of mine to this event. And wish you all have a wonderful year of monkey.  Chao, Shiuh

===============================================================================

Thank you for your messages. If there is honor for the participation in this historical discovery, the honor belongs to Tsing Hua and IPT.

LSC asked every collaborator to distribute local press release synchronized with the main press conference held in Washington DC. There were some exaggeration and incorrection in Taiwan's press report which was beyond my control.

However, what I really like to share with you, as a scientist, is this indescribable feeling of happiness and fulfillment to witness the whole process of making a "big science".  From scratches to final achievement, through the years, people in LIGO showed strong teamwork with loyalty, dedication, hard working, exceptional scientific quality, academic ethics, 100% rigorousness, and to my impressiveness, in this large organization technical discussion always goes in a true objective way and decision making in a democratic process ....., all the virtues intrinsic to a successful big scientific exploration, they got most. And of course, continuous, sufficient and even generous government funding was a necessity. I am lucky to spend several years before my retirement to learn from those people in LSC. I wish truely those qualities could one day be rooted in our own land.

Happy new year and best regards to you all

Dear Shiuh,

Thank you for your modest reply which showed your passion and honesty
as a TRUE scientist in EE Dept.

No doubt that you and your team are "臺灣之光". :-)

Taiwan's research level has jumped up a lot as compared with those days when we were at Tsing Hua.

Our classmate Dr. Yang-Fang Chen at 台大物理系 also made remarkable progress on Nano Technology.

Another classmate Dr. Ming-Way Lee  at 中興大學物理系 also published quite a few research papers on applied physics.

Hope Taiwan scientific researches will keep advancing to the world class level in the near future to make great contribution to the world.

TSMC has proved that Taiwan can be No. 1 Semiconductor Foundry in the world.  We are sure Taiwan can have more No. 1 in the world.

When you have time to come to Silicon Valley again later, please let us know earlier so we can throw a celebration party for you. :-)

Happy Chinese New Year to you all.

Dear Shiuh,

Keyu is my good young alumni friend who is the current president of Northern California Tsing Hua ( both Beijing and Hsinchu ) alumni association.

This is a great idea. Keyu is a very active president. He organized a good seminar to the public shortly after he became the president last year. He, 物74學姊昱寧及學長宗復 and others also organized other activities as 北加州梅竹賽...etc.

It will be great that you can give a 重力波(世紀大發現) seminar to the public here. Your Physics PhD candidate son at Caltech is also welcome to the seminar with you.:-)

Look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Dear Shiuh,

We are so glad for you.  LIGO team in which you are part of it has achieved remarkable milestone. The tiny, tiny voice from an event, far far away, and LIGO team is able to listen and interpret it, which is very amazing.  Speaking of Relativity, I remembered we were required to take fundamental Physics for the first two years in the college.  Fundamental physics course were divided into several topics of classical dynamics, statistics dynamics, EM dynamic, quantum mechanics, ... and yes Relativity.  Having missed several classes due to sitting up too late playing bridge the previous nights, some of us, me included, totally gave up the lecture being taught that time.  Until a new topic of Relativity started, we regrouped and came to class on time, not only on time, we sit in the front role to show our refreshed attitude toward that subject.  That's how serious we wanted to learn Relativity.  Oh, that was a long long time ago.  You seem to be the only one left continuing actively in the pursuit of understanding the subject.

Pardon me for sharing the following.  Not long ago, Higgs particle, associated with mass of very very small scale, and now the gravitation wave, associated with mass of very very large scale, how amazing the universe is full of wonder.  It keeps us fascinated of the creation since the dawn of man’s history.  Just as described in the Bible, over more than three thousand years ago, that, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis, 1:1) and "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge." (Psalm 19:1-2).  Einstein must understand these statements and try to interpret it in a way we appreciate as scientists.  Since LIGO verified his interpretation, more wonders will be revealed using this technology.  May we all appreciate the speech that the creator speaks continuously and transcendentally.  Blessings!

Again, congratulation to your remarkable achievement.

We have another classmate who has been working on a project that requires unwavering belief and a dedication no less than the LIGO team.   Yang Wan talked about her work last time when we had a reunion at CK's place.  I hope we will hear good news from her as well and we will see the cancer detector developed by her used worldwide in many clinics soon!

I watched Carl Sagan's COSMOS many years ago.  I remember the great sense of awe and yearning inspired by him.  I think I will watch it again.

Did you see the computer generated representation of the event? Two swirling black holes merged to become one.  It looks so real and intuitive.  But how many people can follow the mathematics description of the event or the scientific analysis of the detected signal?   I wonder which is real?

Dear Shiuh, congratulations and kudos to you and all involved. It is a triumph of technology that could only be accomplished in the 21st century.  It is a feat beyond words: resolving deformation of less than one wavelength of light (4x10-7 m)  out of a distance of 4 km (4x103 m)—a precision of better than 1 out of 1010, truly unthinkable. This accomplishment allows us to bask in the glory of relativity at least for a dayJ.

Dear Constance, Thank you for still remembering what said back in 2007.  The hand-held breast cancer detector Wei and I developed is out of our lab and moving nicely towards clinics--It has been FDA approved last year and the company licensed the technology is currently conducting clinical trials in the US and South America with a trade name, iBE (intelligent breast exam).  It is sensitive where mammography is not. Thus will be very useful for young western women (i.e., under 40) and virtually all Eastern Asian women.

Currently, Wei and I are working on a simple blood test for early cancer detection/cancer recurrence monitoring. Hopefully, I can this happening before I die. Best, Wan

Dear Wan and Wei-Heng,

Congratulation to you for getting approval from FDA for your iBE medical
device.

Wow, your iBE is even better than
Mammogram which gave false alarms occasionally. To save money on Mammogram, US insurance companies limit women to do Mammogram only at age 50 and above which is very controversial.

Hope your iBE device will pass the clinical trials soon to benefit many many women young and old in the world.:-)

         Best Regards,

         Albert Yian
