Wan, Wei-Heng, Lee-Yeh, Joseph, Steve, and Albert, thank you for the comforting words.
It was certainly a great loss for me, Teresa, and our children. I hope it was also a great teaching for us about life. My mother was 92. My mother-in-law was 90. They had earned the respect from their children and grandchildren to them through their graceful aging process, something I am striving to achieve too.
The following is a short essay my second son wrote after learning the death of my mother. The best way to honor our parents, I guess, is to make sure the good quality they possess will be passed on from generation to generation.
CK
In this grand family tree, the fruit can hardly fathom the root. Blithely hanging over the ground, not often does it consider its foundations - the branch, the root, and the precarious states the tree once weathered prior to its being.
There are a few things I know firsthand about Grandma. She was always delighted to see and hear from any of her 9 children and many more grandchildren, and to know that they were well. But Family encompassed more than blood; anyone whom her progeny selected as a husband, wife, or partner was treated the same love and respect. In the latest stages of her life, she formed a bond with her paid caretaker, and treated her in a way not unlike a granddaughter.
I remember as a child, sitting on her lap, and looking up and seeing the sublime smile of a consummate matriarch - an expression with nearly imperceptible qualities that could assure the most incorrigible of sinners that they are loved, no matter who they were or what they would become. I see that same smile etched in memories spanning years: as a fumbling teenager, ashamed of losing faculty in my mother tongue - and as an adult, kneeling beside her wheelchair, even as her body and mind were quickly fading.
But most things I know about my grandmother I only know through stories. She was born in 1918 in Beijing, China. She and her husband, my grandfather, a Kuomintang military officer, had 6 children and lived in the southern Yunnan province. They were separated when my grandfather was eventually stationed in Taiwan. When the Communists emerged victorious, my grandmother fled to Burma with a brother and two sons, while the others were left in the good hands of her own mother and siblings. In 3 years time, they relocated to Taiwan, reunited with my grandfather, and bore 3 more children, including my father. It wasn't until 1989 until the two sides reunited - nearly 40 years of separation.
To me and to others of my generation, these events are legends, folklore from time immemorial, the unrest that served as the backdrop of our peaceful times. It is astounding to consider the power of will and tireless love from which prosperous generations sprang forth and moved all over the world. I look at my father and see that her formidable essence remains on this Earth like a sarira; may it come to pass someday that I can recognize her virtues in myself.
If the humble fruit were to examine its beginnings, it would see a branch. If it looked further, it would see a root. Upon witnessing the totality of this tree, it would come to understand that the utter improbability of its peaceful existence is predicated by staggering greatness.

Albert, I will not be able to join the dinner on Nov 13. I had extended my stay in Taipei since my mother-in-law passed away the past Tuesday. It was a bad month for me since I just lost my mother in Oct.
Have a great gathering. Sorry that I will miss the chance to meet with Prof. Chiang this time.

It's my pleasure to tell you that Phys 76 classmates also have great kids too. Some are medical doctors now or will become
medical doctors soon, some kids have graduated from Stanford University, Harvard University or will graduate from Harvard
and Stanford soon. Some kids graduated from Caltech, Carnegie Mellon universities, Duke University. Certainly some kids
graduated from University of California because some Phys 76 classmates are Calif. residents and get good Price/Performance
deals from U.C. before 2010 (now UC is a lot more expensive yet with less good programs due to big Calif. budget deficit).
Phys 76 Taiwan classmates' kids also graduated from National Taiwan university, National Tsing Hua university, National
Chung-Hsing university...etc. which are TOP schools too.
Thank you very much again.
Look forward to seeing you and your wife again in the near future.
Albert Yian
Dear All:
It is very wonderful to have the chance to have a reunion with your class. Thank Albert for sending us the pictures taken by his lovely and charming daughter. My wife and I were deeply impressed by the diversity and success you all achieved after your graduation from Tsing Hua. For a teacher, nothing can be prouder than the realization of the achievements of his students.
I have some supplements for the stories of Albert. Prof. Yen donated 5 millions N.T. to our Department instead of Tsing.Hua University. Therefore, our Department has the absolute control for this fund. There is a committee in our Department to determine how to use this fund. In the past, the interests of this fund had been used to promote the sport and musical activities of the students and faculties of our Department. Professor Shen (沈君山) now stays in his original dormitory which is in the Tsing Hua campus. A lady from mainland China is now taking care of him 24 hours a day. As to my 3 kids, there are also some corrections. My 1st daughter is now an associate professor at the Department of Food Science and Biological Technology of Chung Hsing University (中興大學). She is now struggling for a promotion to professor. Our 3rd kid is a son who is now an orthopedic surgeon in Taipei Veteran Hospital (台北榮民總醫院). You may say that all my kids have a fairly good start in their careers due to their diligence. However, they are far from “success” as described by Albert.
Best wishes.
