jobs failing for unknown reason - investigating

Hi folks

Over the last couple of weeks, jobs have been failing unexpectedly - I've found that if I re-submit them, sometimes they run and sometimes they don't. There isn't anything consistent about this, so I suspect that we have a piece of hardware that is going to fail completely very shortly.

This is not directly associated with the new web server machine - because of software issues with that, we're still running the old one!

All I can do is apologize and ask you to resubmit jobs if they fail, except if it's a batch job - in which case you should let me know and I'll do what I can to rescue it.
