Liefeld surprised fans with an update on the Bloodstrike movie, by revealing a proof-of-concept trailer directed by Silvera. The trailer and announcement were posted Thursday in an Instagram post. "Here is your first glimpse of Bloodstrike as we work our way towards a cinematic experience," Liefeld wrote. "This is just a tease of what lies ahead. I am dedicated now more than ever to bringing my Extreme catalogue to life with talented partners like Phil, and this is just the beginning."
Reports of a Bloodstrike adaptation have been confirmed as early as 2012, when Adi Shankar's 1984 Private Defense Contractors acquired rights to produce the film. The project has been stalled with numerous development hurdles since then, and at one point even Netflix was involved in the production. Liefeld expressed his initial frustration for the delays, saying, "When taking a comic book from page to screen there are always hurdles, screenplay, screenwriters, talent that attach and move on. It gets old really fast."
"Phil had been there at the beginning of my own career and expressed his passion for my library of Extreme characters, there was one that stood out above all the rest, Bloodstrike," Liefeld continued, confirming Silvera is the perfect person to helm the film.
Liefeld himself is an established name in comics, having created Deadpool, Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, and Stryfe for Marvel Comics. He created Youngblood, a team of celebrity superheroes initially developed in their own self-titled comic. He also created Bloodstrike, which follows the exploits of a super agent assassination squad covertly employed by the US government. Bloodstrike was first published in 1993 through Liefeld's Extreme Studios under Image Comics.
