Hi all,

Naturalis has now officially kicked off the project to host TreeBASE. This is going to be completed by the end of the year. Actually, the timeline is roughly that October will be used for prep internally, and during November an external will be hired to automate deployment and replication.

One of the first decision points on our end is where the code should be hosted. Currently, TreeBASE is at SourceForge, which is starting to become a terrible place to host open source projects. GitHub would obviously be better, but now the question is under what account or organization. Naturalis have no preference: we have our own GitHub organization, but realize that our hosting is also not forever (and don't necessarily want to impose our name over it) so the choice is presumably either github.com/Naturalis/TreeBASE or something like github.com/phylofoundation/TreeBASE. What do you think?

Any reason not to use the existing TreeBASE organization?

No, no reason at all, other than that I had forgot about it. So we have three options, to my mind in order of decreasing plausibility:

I agree with Rutger's ordering. The existing TreeBASE org seems like the right place.

Seeing that no diverging opinions have been voiced over the last week I will tell Naturalis ICT that we've decided to move the code to github.com/treebase. As I am one of the owners I will be able to add additional people as needs arise. I will assume I have your blessing to do so.

Hi Rutger, that sounds great, and please let us know if there is anything we can do (as PRF) to help. There is a lot going on these days, and the PRF members are directly or indirectly part of the action, but not really the PRF itself so much. Perhaps PRF is a backup if the current activity of OpenTree, FuturePhy, PhyloTastic and other projects dies down, or more a specifically focused TreeBASE or ToLWeb effort becomes urgent. Thanks for the updates- Mark

I like Mark's idea of PRF as a backup / maintainer of currently funded projects -- nice way to efficiently create long term stability (well, ignoring its presumed lack of money).

Best,
Brian
