Hi all,

I got this notice that http://www.phylofoundation.org/ is (soon to be) expired. I was under the impression that we had transferred ownership of this domain but I am not sure, is this perhaps still on our "to do" list? If that's the case, it has now become urgent.

Best wishes, hope you're all well,

Rutger

We should renew this and perhaps renew other things related to the Pylorf as well!
I know Mark Westneat has his hands full with other matters but perhaps soon we can see some progress here?
Best, Rob

Hi folks, in two weeks I switch jobs, resigning from Field Museum and taking a position as Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. Long story, the short version is- huge relief for me. I will be ditching all of my admin duties and my role in the long, drawn-out fight to save science at the Field, and be able to return to actually doing some science. I am willing to continue with the PRF and try to rejuvenate it, if everyone else wants to and we have something substantive and creative to do. There is a lot to do, in regard to TreeBASE and ToLWeb and the many other ToL initiatives out there, so we should have that conversation soon. Conference call? 2013 meeting? Thoughts?  Cheers, Mark

I'm in.  There is a major need, still, and I think there was big meeting recently on this very topic at NCEAS?  I think we may need to understand the current landscape a bit more and try to figure out next steps, given we have enthusiasm, an eentsy bit of time to devote, some support from NESCent, and not much else we can invest at the moment.

Best, Rob

I am in for a meeting. Let's talk over Skype / G+ in the near future, and plan for a face-to-face. I am not travelling at all until late October. If you let me know your (rough) availability in the month or so, I will make up a doodle poll with times.

I'm 12 hours away from Eastern time, so afternoons in the US are really bad for me. Perhaps this is the only slot that actually works?:

9AM - 10AM Durham
8AM - 9AM Chicago
7AM - 8AM Boulder
3PM - 4PM Leiden
9PM - 10PM Singapore

Singapore does not do daylight savings, so after that change, the coordination becomes worse!

Yes, we should Skype/G+.  I could do the time slots Bill mentioned, even though it would be rather on the early side for me (6AM).  I am unavailable 3-14 Oct, 23 Oct - 14 November.

Hi again, reminder that we are doing a PRF Google + video hangout tomorrow (morning for most of us- 10am EST). All you need is to log into a gmail account and then go to the + section, search for me- mwestneat- and add me to your circles. I will start the hangout a few minutes early and see if I can find Val and Michael on there (so far can't find either of you in the G+ realm). Its worth it for the excellent free video conferencing-  Mark

Dear PRF Board:

As you know, NESCent is closing down, and TreeBASE will soon become orphaned. Previously Karen had made arrangements with Duke Libraries to continue hosting TreeBASE, however our contact at Duke has since taken a job elsewhere and there’s little indication that the library’s data services are willing to honor this previous verbal agreement.

Fortunately, Rutger has convinced Naturalis Biodiversity Centre to host TreeBASE for the next three years. Attached is a MOU that they have drafted. We need to consider this offer, perhaps discuss the consequence of NESCent closing more generally, and if we favor the Naturalis offer we need to find a way to formally accept it.

While the PRF has entered a quiescent period, we need to revive our communication given that there is urgency to this decision. Perhaps we should even consider a PRF meeting in Leiden for a ceremonial handover? (But NESCent’s money for this has probably already expired…)

regards,

Bill

I'm relatively certain that it hasn't. The only difficulty with a PRF
meeting in Europe is that we can likely only fund travel of people
*from* the US. With Rutger already in Leiden, this would (I think) only
leave the question open of how to support Bill's travel from Singapore.
It may still be possible given that he's a US citizen, but that would
have to be clarified. If we can't pay directly, perhaps PRF can, and
could then invoice NESCent for "meeting logistics". (That's assuming
that the PRF's incorporation and 501(c)3 status are all in good standing.)

The overall travel costs would of course be much higher with a location
in Leiden than they would be otherwise, but since there was no meeting
of the PRF Board for at least the last two years, I wouldn't necessarily
expect an issue with that.

Hi everyone, it is great to see that TreeBASE has a new home for a while. As the most slack and neglectful Director of a foundation ever, I am pleased to see that both ToLWeb and TreeBASE remain viable. There is a lot going on in the world of Trees of Life, and I am curious where the PRF now fits into the current activities. I guess the first question is, are we still officially in existence? If so, should we have a G+ hangout and talk about what our aims are going forward? David and I are part of an NSF conference series grant called FuturePhy, recently funded to discuss the priorities for NSF programs on resolving, storing, using and serving the Tree of Life. We are just now reaching out to key people in the phylogenetics community about participation, and I'd like to talk to all of you about joining in the discussions. Certainly this conference series as it develops, will relate to the aims of PRF. FuturePhy is funded not so much to actually do stuff as to bring the community together to talk about all the stuff that should be done (and tell NSF what the priorities are). But we might be able to do some small things as well, would be worth discussing.
I'd enjoy going to Leiden for a PRF meeting, but we would need to have a compelling agenda, and perhaps some cleverly chosen new Board Members to join (and eventually replace) our current membership?
Talk to you soon- Mark

Yes, though I don't know whether the legal person is in good standing. Assuming the tax filings and everything are in order, we're more or less in existence, right? We've probably broken our own bylaws about meeting schedules, though.

If so, should we have a G+ hangout and talk about what our aims are going forward?

Something like that would be good, I think.

Yup. I guess we want the Leiden meeting to coincide with the Naturalis instance going live, by the end of the year, so now would be a good time to start thinking about new members.
