Hi all,

happy new year! Hope you all had lovely holidays.

To kick off the new year - it's happened: our registration of phylofoundation.org, which was registered on my (now stolen) credit card, has lapsed. GoDaddy takes PayPal, so that would be one way to re-activate it. Otherwise we might move to a different registrant.

Hi Rutger,

Am I right in thinking that http://www.namecheap.com is cheaper than GoDaddy?

At any rate, when I searched on  phylofoundation.org using namecheap, I got a "not available" reply -- perhaps it still needs to be released in some way by you.  Can you do this? the PayPal  account name is c...@phylofoundation.org. If you need the password, I can send it to you under separate copy, or you can get it from the wiki.

According to WHOIS, the domain doesn't expire until Dec 13, 2013. The notice below is for cancellation of the SSL certificate, not the domain itself.

BTW the domain shows as a "private registration", i.e., contact details are masked through DomainsByProxy. I assume that nonetheless you are the owner, though.

Ah, yes, the domain is still active - maybe I should have checked that first. Not sure why I bought an SSL certificate in the first place, do we need one?

But yes, I am the owner.

You don't absolutely need one, but if you want to serve any content under https, you should have one, because a self-signed one will result in ugly and (purposely) deterring warnings to people who visit that content.

There is no reason to have one if you don't have or plan to soon have content under https. And you can always buy it later. You probably bought it because it was heavily discounted at the time you bought the domain.

That is the case now anyway, at least when you go from the static pages to the protected content (minutes and such) that is served up from the phylorf.org domain.

Either that or the hideous GoDaddy interface snuck a checkbox past me that I should have unchecked.
