Subject: World Usability Day 2007 (November 8): Phoenix Event!
Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 21:18:11 -0700

I'm soliciting your support, involvement and discussion for World
Usability Day 2007 (WUD). If you don't know about World Usability Day,
it is a yearly event that has been growing in participation over the
past 3 years. More than 40,000 people in 175 cities in 35 countries
participated in World Usability Day 2006. The website is www.worldusabilityday.org.

The focus for World Usability Day 2007 -- November 8, 2007 -- is
healthcare. Whether it's new medical devices or technologies; drug
research, approval, or delivery; patient forms or medical record
sharing; emergency disaster planning; increasing the functionality of
hospitals; or everyday healthcare delivery, EVERYONE is affected by
usability in healthcare. We kicked off World Usability Day 2007 with a
special presentation at the UPA conference in Austin in June. My
introduction and four case studies are available for viewing on the
WUD home page.

I'd like to get a local Phoenix event set up this year. We have never
had a World Usability Day event in the Phoenix area. Tucson has had an
event the past few years. There's no reason why we can't put on a
successful event in Phoenix this year, with your help!

I'm involved in the global activities as the healthcare chairman for
World Usability Day 2007. I have a strong background in healthcare
usability and Elizabeth Rosenzweig, the founder of WUD, asked me to
chair the healthcare committee.

I am beginning to reach out to the local IT and healthcare community
for sponsorship and participation in this year's event. If you have
any ideas, suggestions and contacts, please let me know.

Even though the focus this year is on healthcare usability, sponsors,
presentations and activities to not have to specifically address
healthcare usability issues. Any areas of usability, either hardware,
software or processes are welcome topics for the local event.

We will be seeking sponsors to cover event expenses and to ensure that
all participants and attendees will receive a World Usability Day gift
package (backpack, t-shirt, etc.). Any sponsorship ideas and efforts
are welcome.

Please visit the World Usability Day website for more information:
www.worldusabilityday.org

Also, I have posted the press release and my introduction and case
study on my website:
www.theomandel.com/news/events.html#wud

Let the discussion and involvement begin!!

Cheers,
Theo

Whoopsie. I probably should have sanitized your email address before I
posted that, Theo. Bad user; no cookie.

Sounds great. I'm in, and I should be able to convince several of my
colleagues to participate as well.

I will make sure there is discussion on this topic at Refresh Phoenix
meetings between now and then. We have dozens of web professionals
that attend those meetings and I would imagine a portion of them would
be willing to attend an event like this.

For Usability Day '06, I happened to listen to a panel on healthcare
that was put on by Washington DC UPA. There was a great speaker there
from the Mayo Clinic - Dr. Peter Elkin. <http://www.stcsig.org/
usability/newsletter/0701-wud-dc.html>. Phenomenal speaker -
incredibly motivated and enthusiastic. I don't think he hails from
this area, but he might be able to recommend a local contact. Given
that Mayo has a sizable presence here in the Valley (and from what I
hear, a strong human factors interest), we might be able to reach out
to them.

I am new to the group but would be interested in this event. I will
also discuss it with my co-workers and get them on board.

To stimulate interest and discussion on World Usability Day 2007,
here's a link to a panel presentation put on in Washington, D.C. for
last year's WUD event. This is something we should think about for the
Phoenix event in November.

in Healthcare
