Hello,

I'm a new PhD student at ASU and I will be working with the Center for Policy Informatics.  Is there any chance that this group can or will be reignited?   Can anyone suggest other venues for open data / open government discussion and work groups in Phoenix?

Best regards,
Jordan Bates

I'm also interested in reignition. I know Marc was driving some of it initially .. you still on here, Marc? :)

Hi everyone-

The original group organizers (Mark Ng, Brian Shaler, and myself) have all moved on to other interests, so if there is going to be a reignition, a different team (or individual) will have to lead the way.

I'll also add that the original vision (software developers, city officials, and journalists with intersecting interests) doesn't have to be carried forward. Plenty of new and interesting data-related areas have emerged since this group was created.

Regards,

Marc Chung

Hey Jordan!

With the assistance of Kevin Curry and Hannah Young of Code for America (and Andrew Greenhill in the Tucson City Manager's office!), we just launched Code for Tucson a little over a month ago. While I realize Tucson's not Phoenix (and vice-versa), I'd be happy to offer any assistance and lessons learned if you decide to go forward with a civic hacking initiative. I would also suggest checking out Code for America as a possible model for your efforts.

I might still be available to help with "reignition" as you put it, but I wouldn't want to do that by myself- I couldn't dedicate the time necessary :).  I think Brian has the domain name, but all three of us have access to other things like the google group, github accounts, etc.

Maybe whoever is interested could meet up for a drink or a meal or something. I'd be up for that. The least I can do is talk a bit about what did and didn't work before. :)

When, where? I'm in North Phoenix, but regularly work downtown and in Scottsdale. I'd go out to Chandler/Gangplank-ish for meetings, but for just meeting up for a drink to discuss the future of the whole thing, I'd suggest Tempe as pretty central to everyone.  Next week? Wednesday, perhaps?

I am also down but not sure anyone picked a spot in Tempe.. Would Cartel (coffee and/or beer is served there) and/or Casey Moore's in Tempe work?  Say 6:30pm?

Another good spot is Area48 -- ASU's coworking space that is on University Blvd. Free space. http://asuventurecatalyst.org/p/content/area48 (its upstairs in an old restaurant; wifi, etc)

The space is good for a few more weeks, I believe.

Hi, Everyone.

I'm very excited to hear that this is going on!  Unfortunately, I can't make next Wednesday as I teach then (4:30p-7:15p on downtown campus).  That said, please do consider moving forward without me.  I also just wanted you all to know that there's been a few of us discussing in back channel about how to support this effort to set up a CfA for Phoenix/Tempe.  It turns out Melanie Reilly (cc'ed) was involved in creating the CfA for Mesa.  Further, several professors here (i.e., myself, Erik Johnston, Retha Hill) are interested in supporting this endeavor.  I'm also a member of the Phoenix General Plan Advisory Board from ASU that Darren Petrucci (cc'ed) is heading up.  As such, we have some good connections with the city of Phoenix already and this CfA focus could fit in nicely with the sort of work that our advisory board has been working on. Finally, a close friend of mine, Harlan Weber, is the head of the Boston Code for America Brigade and would be happy to help give us some advice on getting this started here.
Overall, I think we've got a nice quorum of interest in this so it would be good to try and get all those interested in supporting this together to get this moving forward.

All the best,
Eric

Sorry to chime in late! I'm glad to see a renewed interest in this group. Unfortunately, I'm not in town enough to organize or even regularly attend, but I am happy to help out in an way possible.

I'm currently hosting the web site, which can be updated via a Pull Request to this GitHub repository: https://github.com/phxdata/PHXdata-Website

While it's not a GitHub Pages site, it's a mere git-pull away from being updated (I wanted to retain the ability to host other apps/initiatives in subdirectories).

To that end, one of our old projects—Recast, a form scanning, selective OCR applying, and crowdsourced review service—comes to mind from time to time. I'd still love to get to a semi-usable Alpha version of that. One of these days...™

I'll be in town for the last week of September, if anyone wants to set up another meetup around then.

Good to see Brian back on the list too - I'd love to see recast revived, too, though I have met people tackling the problem at some conferences.  Recast did come up in our conversations, particularly when we talked about the knight challenges.

I'm going to summarise what we talked about tonight - there were four/sort of five of us there - everyone there had an interest in civic hacking, and most of us had at least a passing interest in the other subjects we used to have an interest in (Civic Hacking, Data Journalism, Visualisation and "Big Data").  Jordan suggested that we should think about running a data pot-luck (he explained it as someone brings a data set, and we work out something cool to do with it and do it in one day. Also, actual pot luck food.) hackathon, and all of us were pretty excited about that idea, so we're going to try that first. Depending on how much interest there is, we'll either just do it at someones house/a coffee shop, or organise a venue (Gangplank? Co+Hoots? ASU somewhere?) to do it in.

What say you all?

Mark, Jordan, Sean, and I met the Sept 3rd meeting at Cartel, but as Mark mentioned it was mostly an informal meet and greet with discussion regarding the way things were run previously and opportunities such as Code for America and The Knight Challenge. Definitely hoping to see more passionate faces at the next meeting.

I think the datapotluck idea is genius. In addition to working on and discussing individual projects, I would like to get more of an idea for the direction we would collectively like for this group to take. It would be nice to see this group establish a more definite identity. Civic Hacking, Data Journalism, Visualization and "Big Data" are all very broad categories. From what Eric mentioned, it sounds like there are several groups around the valley that are working on similar projects and I feel that it would be good for us to briefly touch on what our goals are from/for PHXdata. I think this would be especially nice for newcomers.

So, let's get this thing going!

Personally, I feel that Gangplank would be the best location since it is free, readily accessible to the public without parking issues, the location Mark mentioned that the meetings were held before, plus, one with a active software community.

Since Brian mentioned that he would be in town, perhaps we can shoot for a meeting that week. Either way let's set a meeting date by the end of the week so we can make the necessary arrangements and reach those who are interested in attending. I have set up a doodle poll here, if none of the times work for you, feel free to suggest your own.

Hmm, so looking at the doodle schedule poll it seems like the 25th around 6:00-8:30 or so is the optimal time for folks at the moment. Do you guys want to just make that the plan and all meet at gangplank at that time then?

Also, any input on the dataset you guys would like to all meet up to work on?

Sounds good.

Eric, I'm sorry we weren't able to accommodate you. Perhaps we could get more creative with the times or arrange a Google Hangout next time to make things work. Hopefully you can join us next time or join in/catch up here on the listserve.

Unless anyone has objections, let's meet at Gangplank, 6PM on Wednesday. Since Gangplank has hacknight during that time, we shouldn't have a problem. I will send a notification email and/or reserve a room just in case.

Date: Wednesday, September 25th
Time: 6:00PM
Location: Gangplank HQ Chandler
Address: 260 S Arizona Ave, Chandler, AZ 85225, parking located directly across the street

Come with laptops, ideas, and data!

Excited for the meetup on Wednesday! So everyone will be bringing a dataset?

I'd love to have little hackathons like data potlucks, group initiatives, grant applications, etc., but it would probably be more ideal to do that type of thing on occasional full-day weekend get togethers. The majority of the hours I put into group projects were at meetings, which resulted in short, 2-3 hour, distracted sprints while socializing.

Hi folks, I'm a New Yorker but am in Souther AZ on Monday, and would be psyched to drive up to PHX Monday afternoon/evening to meet up with anyone who is seriously working on Open Data for Phoenix.

My firm works on an open source open data platform called DKAN (http://drupal.org/project/DKAN and http://getdkan.com) that is starting to be used by various Code for America brigades, as well as by governments, and we'd love to help you kick the tires on it if there's interest.

You just missed the east valley code for America fellows! They just started a Google group for the CFA brigade for the valley. https://groups.google.com/forum/?nomobile=true#!forum/cfa-phx there might be some people there interested, also, if no phxdata people are..
