Joe di Stefano got in contact with me. He asked a few questions about
the project that I couldn't provide good answers for, so I thought I'd
forward them on to the group, for Andrew and others to answer:

"I'm curious to know what the vision is for the project, what the
goals are locally, who "owns" it and what their interests are."

To give a little more definition to this, I think we're both looking
for some pointers to inform the design and functionality of the site.
For instance, should we keep the general layout and features of Open
Data Philly? Anything that should be added or removed? What about
content for the broken links (About/FAQ/Useful Links/Contact/Terms)?

Again, for reference, the default install is up at:
http://catalog.phxdata.org/

I think the vision was to just get it up and running. Demo over memos.
Really not seeing enough activity here to warrant much more. Maybe I'm
wrong?

Ouch, sorry I never got around to making this pretty. Been moving/starting a new job/generally crazy. Still totally willing to do it if y'all are interested. Could start Monday.

It wasn't a dig on you. We totally understood your situation. I think
I was talking about that this list is 95+....

You're one of them, aren't you Andrew? ;-3)

While "if you build it, they will come" sounds great and all, these kinds of efforts generally need to be bootstrapped. Got any data to catalog?

We should have a session soon in which a couple of us fill this
service thing up with stuff. I've not organised a PHXData session in a
while, which has been a function of how busy my life is right now.
Anyone else want to step up and organise ? Otherwise I'll do it next
week..

Yes..Brian, I am. Your point?

Just looking for someone to put some images and shit in the app so we
can see what the fuck it does. Then you can bootstrap and VISION to
your hearts content.

I'm going to lead a session at WhereCampPHX next week on OpenDataPHX (or whatever we want to call it).  I'd just assume use what we have here to get the discussion going.

We'll have 125+ geogeeks who could start uploading data right away.  That's an opportunity we can't miss.

Should it really be on your shoulders? I really don't see the point of
all this if people aren't going to get involved.

Any good open source project will have one "monarch" in the beginning to drive the project and provide focus and vision. From this others that participate will step up and be able to offset that time and energy. The "build it and they will come" is a fallacy, just like the overnight startup success. One person needs to take the lead on this and drive it.

Help someone like me, who would get involved and help if I had a clear path of something I could actually contribute as the general vision is not something I am passionate enough about to get involved without that.

Let's step back a bit here. I said. Hey...this data catalog
code...it's open...let's build this. Five people responded positively,
three offered to help. One did. I provided server space, talked to the
owners of the code and did some searching for a designer. Data would
be great....that's the POINT. I appreciate that "build it and they
will come" is a fallacy...but really we built it for what...the five
of us?

Vision is great. Let's set up a time and place to talk about it. While
we are on vision. Can we change the website? We never meet twice a
month. Mark Ng is the only pushing for meeting and I haven't seen Marc
Chung involved in a long time.

Should we have ONE meeting a month...with other events when we want
them. I'm up for hosting another BBQ...if people want to come work on
the data catalog. I had a great time building the boundary service.
Also....we'd have to work around his schedule but Steve Doig has
offered to teach some Census stuff if anyone is interested.

Creating an account fails, see attachment.

Can't add data.

The code is in github IIRC, I will inspect that this weekend and see about changing the Philly's to PHX or something equally simple just to get started.

Lets get cut down to one meeting a month, and lets have a show of
hands for census stuff. If a bunch of you are interested, let's ask
Steve to give us some good days for him - he's already expressed
willingness to me previously..

Brian kindly put the PHXdata site in github a while back :
https://github.com/phxdata/PHXdata-Website - if someone wants to fork
that and change it to reflect that we don't meet twice a month
anymore, that'd be great. If no-one gets to it, I will this weekend.
:)

Speaking of which, should we just move the site to use github sites?
I seem to recall that Brian said that the server he has it hosted on
was soon to become an ex-parrot.

Andrew,

I love the idea of an open data catalog, but in my opinion these type
of grassroots initiative would be best supported with actual
involvement from the local agencies who are responsible for cataloging
and releasing the data (basically doing all the hard work, and believe
me, it is hard work). To that end, I'm approaching this issue by
working with local state agencies. It's my *hope* that this will
impact the state of OpenGov in Arizona in a big way.

I might not run meetings (Thank You Mark Ng) and I'm not stepping up
to drive this open data catalog, but I can assure you that I am still
very interested in PhxData and OpenGov within Arizona.

Wow, Marc Chung is real.

I love the idea of local agencies being involved, but that doesn't
mean you have to stop doing things until they are involved. Who are
you working with? What have they said?

I never said you weren't interested...I just never see you around.

How much more headway are you getting ? I was really pleased with the
conversations that happened around CityCamp, but not sure what
happened to Apps for Arizona (is that still going to be a thing ?).
Is there anything the group can do to help ?

Looking at the attendee list for WhereCampPHX I see a ton of .gov
emails. Opportunity to build on CityCamp.

github sites seems like a no-brainer for any site without dynamic
content. Phxdata would fit in that category.
