Hi,

I hit a snag installing Passenger onto a Fasthosts (large uk hosting
company) dedicated server (Centos OS).

The problem is the http-devel won't install because fasthosts have a
custom compiled version of httpd installed (to allow integration with
their Matrix control panel I believe. This means httpd-devel
complains that the required version of httpd is missing.

I spoke to Fasthosts and they could only suggest removing their
version of httpd if I wish, and install a standard copy, but this
means breaking their Matrix control panel (and effectively going
unsupported for pretty much everything on the machine).

So I have a choice of Passenger vs the Fasthosts Matrix Control Panel.

I've got a VM Server installed on the box so my current plan is to use
that which frees me to hack the box as I want and still keep the
control panel for basic / simple sites. I've got a Rails stack on the
VM working OK, but I'm not over familiar with the maintenance of the
VM's themselves so it's not a perfect option either.

But could anyone advise if there is a way to work around the httpd-
devel dependency problem ie could I somehow get Passenger installed
without changing the version of httpd installed on the machine?

Many thanks

Rob

Do Fasthosts provide the source for the custom httpd installation? If
they provide the source, you should be able to compile Passenger
against that source.
