Add record without file upload

Hi,

With the current add record POST command in the API, a file has to be given which will be duplicated in the database storage location when uploaded.
We have a large library of media in an existing system that we are planning on keeping as originals and we are looking into Phraseanet to use as a tagging system.
Is there a way to add a record using an existing file path and have the subviews generated from the original file path, without uploading the original document and copying data?
The original media file would then be referenced by Phraseanet as the original document. The machine running Phraseanet will have access to these existing file paths.

If this is not currently possible can you give us some pointers on getting this up and running?
