phpMyAdmon 2.5.1 running MySQL 3.23.58 on Linux running slow

I run the above installation and it is running very slow. I can't
determine at what point it started running slow. The slowness is not
caused by query complexity - just clicking a link to a new screen can
take up to 10 seconds.
