Missing SQL error messages

I am running phpMyAdmin 2.10.2 on Solaris and php 5.16 in safe mode
When I enter an invalid query I see the error number but not the SQL
error message that will give a hint as to what the error in the query
is.

This is very weird and I have not been able to track it down. I am
not sure if it a lang problem, missing something in php, or that php
is in safe_mode.

Everything else seems to work fine.
