Passing something like this to the template did not work for me:
mailto:test@test.com
It's supposed to be representing mailto:te...@test.com in mixed
notation.

If I put it into the template, it works. If I pass it to the template
with a variable, I do not get any output.

There is no reason why that shouldn't work. Post code and template
snippets if you want help.
