Kickstarting this work ... literally

Hi everyone,

We need to get this project out of hibernation.

My own feelings are that the community wants the results of the project, and is happy to contribute ... but that we need a dedicated core of folks getting the heavy lifting done and enough of the material to reach a tipping point.  And unfortunately, the very people best qualified to do this are, by their nature, extremely busy running teams or firms of their own.

So I want to float an idea that's already been mentioned on Twitter.

I'd like to put a request onto Kickstarter to raise the funding required to employ one or hopefully two recent grads, or industrial placements, to do the bulk of the work under our direction.

Thoughts, comments?

Best regards,

Stuart Herbert

Hi Stefan,

That's a good idea.  I do think that we need more work done than we'll get done through Summer of Code.

If I draft the information needed for Kickstarter, is the group happy to review it, and then put their names to it too? The more credibility behind the bid, the more likely we are to gain the funding.

Best regards,
Stu

Excellent idea! Additionally, we could consider keeping an eye on
Google Summer Of Code to see if we can participate in that. The idea
is excellent, but as you said, some people need to actually put some
work in.

Sounds good to me.

Sure, there's much more work, but any help is appreciated ;)

If there is specific stuff that needs to be done, I could also help
out. I could probably put in a Very Special Rate(tm) for for instance
1 day a week (getting in my required funds through my main project but
spending one day a week or so on this). Just an idea of course :)

Hi,

Not a bad idea, but be aware that Kickstarter requires you to be US based. http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq#DoIHaveToBeUsbToStarAProj

I'd also be interested in what sort of "reward" we'd offer to a funder.

Regards,

Rob....
