Hi All!

I'm David Hurley, Community Development Manager for the Joomla Project. Andrew Eddie is our current voting representative to the PHP-FIG, but due to increased work and unexpected family pressures, he's stepping down from most of his Joomla responsibilities, including the PHP-FIG.

You can see the general announcement here:

Andrew has made it known that he would like Don Gilbert to take his place as the voting representative for the Joomla project. (https://groups.google.com/d/msg/joomla-dev-framework/F50SrRnvG_o/onhFKUeVJXQJ) However, we have our typical processes for choosing leadership positions, and as such, would like to complete that process in order to select the person to take his place.

Since this process will take some time, the Joomla project has elected to temporarily appoint Don Gilbert to act as the voting representative until our final rep is selected.

Thank you!
David

Thanks for the introduction David! I accept the temp position and hope it turns full time. :)

Doesn't this email have to come from Andrew? Also, something more concrete than "some time" wouldn't go amiss.

Since Andrew has stepped down, no. We already have a set of links to
the Joomla mailing lists as confirmation as noted in David Hurley's
opening email.

Nope. This is a Voting Representative being "replaced by the Member Project which they represent", not "a Voting Representative ... temporarily confer[ring] their voting rights onto another individual", so, per the bylaws, it should come from the project not the rep.

Actually the membership bylaw says otherwise:

https://github.com/php-fig/fig-standards/blob/master/bylaws/003-membership.md

"This conferral must be notified to PHP-FIG by the current Voting
Representative by sending an email to the main php-fig mailing list.
This email must state the name of the temporary Voting Representative
and the period of time for which their temporary voting rights will
remain valid."

So we do need a fixed time period at least, even if we want to bend on
who actually sends the email.

Alternatively, Joomla could just name David the for-reals
representative, not a proxy. Then if they decide to name someone else
later instead, they can do that, too.

This isn't a case of:

> A Voting Representative may temporarily confer their voting rights onto another individual who is authorised by the Member Project which they represent.

It's a case of:

> A Voting Representative may be replaced by the Member Project which they represent at any time.

It just happens to be a pro tempore replacement:

> Since this process will take some time, the Joomla project has elected to temporarily appoint Don Gilbert to act as the voting representative until our final rep is selected.

No need for an email from Andrew, no need for a fixed time period. They simply need to send another email if and when they elect a new replacement.

Ah, you're right. I misunderstood the original wording.

Not quite - Andrew is no longer the Voting Representative. It's a full
replacement not a temporary leave so it falls to the member project to
pick a successor.

"Each Voting Representative is chosen solely by a Member Project and
their selection is not subject to the approval of PHP-FIG. A Voting
Representative may be replaced by the Member Project which they
represent at any time."

Thanks for the warm welcome. Now, where do I go to cause the most trouble? "Tabs v Spaces" or "PSR-0 Sucks". :P

I really like what the FIG has been up to with the Logging PSR and the other common interfaces. I'd like to see Cache take another lurch forward while I'm "in office".

You could advocate for a "compromise" of alternating four spaces and tabs :p

The fire storm would be fun for those of us who just watch the mailing list. :)

Just kidding of course, been working on switching to spaces myself.

Hey all - Just an update, Joomla has completed the selection process (in record time no less) and chose to make me the permanent voting representative for the project.
